WASHINGTON - The Habs defeated the Capitals 4-3 in overtime at Capital One Arena on Thursday night.

The Canadiens enjoyed two breakaways early in the game, but couldn't convert.
It would be the Capitals who opened the scoring with 12:13 to go in the first.
Captain Alexander Ovechkin took advantage of a faceoff win by Nicklas Backstrom to get a shot off that beat Carey Price up high.
Shea Weber replied for the Habs with 2:17 to go in the opening frame.
The captain one-timed it home for his 14th goal of the season to make it a 1-1 game.

Center Phillip Danault earned the lone assist on the play.
The two teams headed to the room tied at 1-1 after 20, with Washington leading 9-7 in shots.
The Capitals took the lead again with 2:57 to play in the second, when Lars Eller batted the puck out of the air and past Price.
The home team's lead lasted just 1:34 this time, however. Parked in his usual spot, Brendan Gallagher jumped on a loose puck to even the score once again.

It was Gallagher's 20th goal this season, making it the fourth time he's hit the plateau in his career.
The score was tied at 2-2 after 40 minutes, with Montreal now leading 24-21 in shots.
Claude Julien's troops took their first lead of the night just 30 seconds into the third.
Defenseman Ben Chiarot pinched and got a perfect shot off that beat Capitals starter Braden Holtby. It was his eighth goal of the season.

Forward Tomas Tatar earned a helper on the play, setting a new career high in the process with his 34th assist of the season.
Tom Wilson tied the game again with just 20 seconds to go in regulation.
The two teams would need overtime to decide this one, and it would be Chiarot handing the win to the Habs with his second of the game.

The Canadiens are back in action on Saturday night against the Ottawa Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre.
