MORNING SKATE RECAP

NEWARK, NJ - Back at home and back in black, the Devils host the Nashville Predators, wearing their third jerseys for the first time this season. The team will return to the lineup from Thursday night's matchup against Carolina, with Shane Bowers returning to play while Nolan Foote sits out.

Jacob Markstrom will get the start in net.

Although the Predators are close to the bottom of the NHL standings with just 17 points in 21 games and 29th of 32 teams. But they enter Prudential Center coming off one of their biggest wins of the season - over the powerhouse Winnipeg Jets - and that should serve as an important lesson.

"You’ve got to respect every opponent in this league," head coach Sheldon Keefe said. "Winnipeg has been bulldozing their way through the league and obviously that’s Nashville’s last win, so there’s no greater example right there in front of us."

“They beat Winnipeg, one of the best teams in the league last game, so you know that they’re a dangerous matchup," Johnathan Kovacevic said. "They’re looking to stay on the right track so it’s not a team that we take lightly at all.”

What It Takes

It's becoming the norm now to see any player step in front of a shot and go down for a block. It's all part of doing whatever is necessary to win games. On Saturday, it was both Nico Hischier and Dawson Mercer with huge shot blocks in the dying minutes of the game to preserve the one-goal lead, and collectively, the team had 28 blocked shots.

It's those little things that not only help the team win games but bring out the best and motivation in everyone.

“From Day 1 of training camp the message has been, that’s what’s required," Keefe said. "That’s what it takes and if you want to be a top team, a consistent team, it takes what it takes and there’s no shortcuts to do that. I think in this last little stretch, it’s demanded a lot from our team in terms of the quality of opponent and how tight the games have been, and I’ve liked how the guys have managed it.”

“It’s expected from everyone,” Mercer added. “Everyone will be in that situation at one point where, when little things like that are going to come in handy to block those shots. Last game it was me and Nico, but next game it could be two other guys and we know anyone in this room is willing to step in front of that. Whenever it’s your turn, you’ll just do it.”

Building Belief

This most recent stretch of games has been an impactful one. Not just because of the 7-3-0 record in their last 10 games, but because of the quality of opponents the Devils have beaten. They've beaten the Panthers twice, the Hurricanes, and the Capitals to name a few. And it hasn't been by fluke either. It's been their hard work, defending one-goal leads and commitment to their system that has translated into impressive results. What that does too, as Kovacevic explains, is that it builds a new level of belief with every added win.

"I definitely think we have chemistry and now we have the belief too,” Kovacevic said. “We’ve beat a decent amount of good teams lately and we’re looking around and are like, we think we have something here. We’ve got to keep building at it. But as the chemistry grows, that belief grows and I think that can be a really powerful thing.”

“I think just going with how it is, when you’re winning games, everyone is happy," Mercer said. "When things are going well, there’s a lot of confidence and I think just building on that is a huge thing and taking that opportunity when you are winning those tight games that teams are realizing that when you play us. And we just want to make sure that we’re ready because they’re going to be ready to face us.”

THE SCOOP

The Devils sit atop the Metro Division with 30 points on a 14-7-2 record thanks to an 8-3-0 run in their last 11 games. New Jersey just completed its 2024 Moms’ Trip which included two victories against two of the top teams in the division. Thursday the Devils bested Carolina, 4-2, while defeating the Capitals in Washington, 3-2, Saturday night.

Jesper Bratt is having a monster season and leads the Devils in goals (10-t), assists (18) and points (28). Forward Stefan Noesen is tied with Bratt for the team lead in goals with 10 in 23 contests. His career high in goals is 14, set last season with Carolina in 81 games.

The Devils have gotten great goaltending in the past 11 contests. Jersey’s tenders – Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen – haven’t allowed more than three goals in any of the past 11 contests while giving up a total of just 20 (1.81 GAA), which includes two shutouts.

It’s been a rocky start to the season for the Predators. The club finds itself at the bottom of the standings after a 7-12-2 start, which included losing the first five games of the year. The club has gone 7-7-2 since that opening losing streak. Nashville is coming off an impressive 4-1 victory against Winnipeg, handing the dominant Jets just their third loss of the season.

Swedish forward Filip Forsberg leads the Preds with eight goals and 16 points. Newcomers Jonathan Marchessault (4g-8a-12pts) and Steven Stamkos (7g-4a-11pts) are off to slow starts, though Stamkos has three goals in his past three games. As always, Juuse Saros is carrying the load for the club in goal. He’s posted a respectable 2.43 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.
