PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, N.J. - The Devils canceled their morning skate Tuesday due to the current spread of illness and COVID-19 throughout the team.
"It was my decision related to the overall health of the team," head coach Lindy Ruff said. "I just felt that the most important thing for our team as of last night from what I heard was to rest the team. Get them up, get them fluids, get them food, let them rest.
"Talking with our medical staff, it was a decision that I made. I deemed it would be more important than bringing the guys down (to the arena) and having them skate."
CURRENT STATUS
The Devils currently have three players in COVID-19 protocol and others dealing with various illnesses.
"Everybody has been accounted for," Ruff said. "We have other players under the weather. We have one player that will probably miss the game unrelated to COVID due to illness."
Ruff praised the work of his medical staff for their handling of the current situation.
"I think I would quit," Ruff joked. "The job they have to do to keep track of everybody. We've got illness that's not related to COVID. We've got all kinds of that. We've got COVID protocol. We have guys in COVID that don't have symptoms. There are all kinds of different rules for different situations. Daily, from 8 in the morning they have to keep track of everybody. It's no easy job, but they've done a terrific job trying to sort everything out."
PLAYING SICK
While one player will likely miss the game due to illness, others will play while trying to deal with being under the weather. And for them, the key tonight will be decision making.
"Everybody gets sick no matter what profession you're in," Ruff said. "Some people go to work. We have to go to work. We have to play the game the right way. If you don't have quite the energy you don't normally have, you have to play smart.
"Don't get caught on long shifts. Play the game the right way. Don't create a lot of high-risk opportunities against."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (10-11-5) vs. FLYERS (10-12-4)
TV: 7:00 p.m. ET; Televised MSG
RADIO: Devils Hockey Network
Head-to-Head:
The Devils and Flyers meet for the third and final time this season, the only game in Philadelphia during the 2021-22 campaign.
New Jersey has won the previous two meetings this season, 5-2 on Nov. 28 and 3-0 on Dec. 8. The most recent meeting was Mackenzie Blackwood's second shutout this season. Jesper Bratt, Dawson Mercer, and Michael McLeod all scored in the December win.
Devils Team Scope:
New Jersey recently wrapped a stretch of four games in six days where they went 1-2-1 and picked up three points. The Devils most recent win over Philadelphia was during that time span. New Jersey lost to the Nashville Predators and New York Islanders, and fell in a shootout to the Ottawa Senators also during those six days.
With goaltender Jonathan Bernier going on the injured reserve list last week, the Devils have Akira Schmid up with the main club backing up Mackenzie Blackwood. Schmid got his first NHL start against the Islanders on Saturday.
On Monday, the Devils recalled defenseman Kevin Bahl and forward Marian Studenic after center Nico Hischier and defenseman Ryan Graves went into COVID protocol on Saturday. New Jersey announced Monday that Christian Jaros also has joined the league's protocol list.
Jesper Bratt leads the Devils in points with 24 and assists with 16. Andreas Johnsson and Pavel Zacha each have nine goals which leads the team. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood has a 5-4-3 record and is averaging 2.91 goals against and a .913 save percentage.
Flyers Team Scope:
The Flyers have had a tough run, losing nine straight games before breaking that skid against the Vegas Golden Knights on Dec. 10. In Philadelphia's most recent game against the Arizona Coyotes, the Flyers won 5-3, and enter tonight's game with a two-game winning streak.
Mike Yeo is the interim head coach after the team relieved Alain Vigneault of his head coaching duties on Dec. 6. Vigneault is known as a defense-first coach while Yeo pushes his team to be high scoring and offensive minded first.
Flyers Captain Claude Giroux leads his team with 10 goals, 13 assists, and 23 points. Goaltender Carter Hart has a 6-8-3 record with a 2.91 goals against average and .913 save percentage.
By the Numbers:
After scoring the opening goal against the Islanders Saturday, Jesper Bratt is riding a five-game points streak. If he has a point against Philadelphia, it will be his longest points streak of the season.
The Devils and Flyers are separated by one point in the standings with each team playing 26 games. New Jersey has 25 points while Philadelphia has 24.
