It was the Jesper Bratt show in the first period with the Devils winger scoring twice and scuffling with a Los Angeles player as he defended a teammate. It allowed New Jersey to jump out to a 2-1 lead.
The Kings tied things up in the second as they more than doubled the Devils in shots during the middle frame.
It all came down to the third period, where the Kings had the majority of chances. Carl Grundstrom spun and score in the slot and beat Jon Gillies for the go-ahead goal late, as New Jersey would ultimately fall 3-2.
"I think the energy was good in the first and we came out good," said Devils Head Coach Lindy Ruff. "We made a few mistakes in the second I thought. They were sitting in our building and didn't play last night. Their energy just seemed to be just a little bit better than ours. We couldn't quite knock enough people off the pucks and couldn't quite get to the front. You've got to give them a lot of credit. They did a real good job physically and of boxing out and finishing the man."

Here are some observations, notes, and quotes from the game...
- Jesper Bratt not only tallied a sweet breakaway goal to open the scoring at 2:37, but he got into a scrap defending his teammate in that period as well. - That was Bratt's 12th goal of the season. The man who answered back for the Kings also notched his 12th goal. Alex Iafallo. The goal extended Bratt's point streak to five games. - Bratt deposited his 13th goal in the back of the net at 17:34 of the first, on the power play. He's just three goals short of his career-high. It did, however, earn him a new career-high of 36 points. - Jon Gillies had a strong second period for the Devils between the pipes, but allowed a snipe with less than five to play in the frame as LA tied things up 2-2. He stopped 12 of 13 shots in the second. The Devils only had five shots those 20 minutes. Viktor Arvidsson scored the goal. - "I feel like we lacked some of our details in the second and third and didn't get as many chances," said Bratt. - The Kings locked things down in the third a bit more where the Devils had just four shots in the opening 10 minutes of the frame.
