WHAT'S NEXT
The Devils continue their homestand with a game on Tuesday against the Anaheim Ducks. The game can be seen on MSG and heard on the Devils Hockey Network, including right here at NewJerseyDevils.com. Puck drop is 7:08 p.m. ET.
Tickets are still available!
Here are some observations from the game...
- In the opening two periods of play, the Devils had an edge in shots, 32-17, an edge in zone time and an edge in play. What they didn't have an edge in was the scoreboard. They trailed 4-2. A combination of not finishing their scoring chances and the Red Wings' opportunistic scoring was the cause. - It was a tough introduction for goaltender Vitek Vanecek. He was brought in to be a compliment in the crease with Mackenzie Blackwood with an opportunity to possibly steal the No. 1 job. He allowed five goals in the game, including a few goals he would like back - especially a back breaker with .8 seconds left in the second period. It's a long season and he'll certainly have a chance to redeem himself. But it was a tough start. - Devils forward Miles Wood spoke up after the loss to Philadelphia. When a player speaks out like that, they then have to back it up on the ice in the game. And Wood did just that.

Wood, 27, scored his first goal of the season, and first since April 27, 2021, in the second period by driving to the net and swatting it in a pass from Fabian Zetterlund.
Wood was also accessed a cross checking penalty in the first period. Although you don't want to take offensive zone penalties, it was the result of effort and working too hard. You'll take those anytime for how it inspires the team.

- Defenseman Dougie Hamilton loves scoring the opening goal in Devils' home openers. Last year he tallied just 17 seconds into the game for New Jersey. This year it took him until 4:45 of the first period before shooting a low shot far side that eluded Alex Nedeljkovic to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.
