Here are some observations from the game...
- Meier has scored four goals for the Devils since being acquired prior to the trade deadline, and three of them have come in the third period.
- The game was one where two teams were playing well defensively, taking away inside space and not wanting to make any risky plays or make a mistake. The result was a tight game in which each team was waiting for the other to crack first.
"It was a hard hockey game," head coach Lindy Ruff said. "There were pockets of control by both teams. You see this when you play a lot of hockey. ... You take the point and you have to move on."
- Vitek Vanecek was on his game against Tampa Bay Sunday night in a 5-2 victory. That carried over into his game against Minnesota. He started with a big stop on a breakaway chance by Mason Shaw. In the second he found a Frederick Gaudreau shot through traffic for a glove save. Also in the second, an errant pass by the Devils gave Marcus Foligno a chance in the slot that was stopped by Vanecek.
"It was a good game," Vanecek said. "It would be better with the two points."
- Not to be outdone at the other end, Filip Gustvsson was equally as good as Vanecek. He denied Jesper Bratt from the slot on a five-hole stop where he had to squeeze his pads together to stop the puck from sliding through. Gustavsson also came up with a big third-period stop on Jack Hughes from the high slot.
- The Devils fourth line was buzzing. The trio of Nolan Foote, Michael McLeod and Yegor Sharangovich were making the most of its ice time. McLeod created a great scoring chance off a rush play. Sharangovich had a great follow-up opportunity. The line provided energy, and that's exactly its job.
"That fourth line has been good for us," Ruff said. "I thought they gave us the right quality shifts when they were out there."
- Hughes finished the game with 10 shots - which tied a career high (Jan. 7, 2023 vs. NYR).
