PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ -The New Jersey Devils continue their preseason schedule by visiting the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night. The two teams will meet again on Friday at Prudential Center.
The Devils are 2-0 to start the preseason, while the Rangers 1-0-1.

Finding Chemistry

Brendan Smith and John Marino will once again be a pair tonight on the blueline, it's a pairing that has been together all through camp whether it's been in practice or in preseason games.
For a veteran like Smith, this is the first time he feels he's been with on D-partner for an entire camp and it's something he's been relishing.
"I'm happy about it," Smith said after the morning skate, "In previous years I've kind of bounced around with other defensive partners trying to figure out that camaraderie. I've been happy (playing) with Johnny for the whole camp. We just want to keep building, getting better, and I feel the better that we are together, the longer we will stay together."
The two are finding their rhythm together and beginning to mesh their different styles of play.
"I love that he moves his feet, I mean, speed kills," Smith continued, "The area that I'm probably most impressed with is the way he defends without the puck. And he's there and willing, and wants to do that. I really like that he takes care of defense first and then you go play your offense. You earn your offense that way."

Mercer's Versatility

Dawson Mercer will have a chance to play at center against the Rangers, warming up that muscle memory of playing the position. Earlier this week, Mercer played at wing next to Miles Wood and Erik Haula. Tonight he will center a line between Wood and Graeme Clarke.
"We need to have versatility," Ruff said, "You take a centerman out, and we've got a centerman we can put back in. (Yegor) Sharangovich is in the same category, you know he can drop into the middle. I think it's really important that you have guys that can play both positions and you get an injury, or you want to move somebody up the lineup, you can take a guy out and put a guy in."

Health Updates

Mackenzie Blackwood took part in the morning skate but left before the session was over. Blackwood is feeling under the weather and is questionable to play in New York tonight. He continues to be evaluated, however, if he is unable to play it will be Vitek Vanecek who takes over the starting position with Akira Schmid backing up at Madison Square Garden. When it comes to the captain, Nico Hischier left the opening preseason game in Montreal with what was initially thought to be cramps. Earlier this week he underwent testing and Lindy Ruff confirmed that Hischier has a hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated in 10 days' time.
