Bastian Notebook

The Devils practiced at the RWJ Barnabas Health Hockey House in Prudential Center before hitting the road for their longest road trip of the season.
New Jersey will play Carolina, Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose and Seattle over the next two weeks.
Stay tuned for practice updates, videos and notes from Monday's practice.

Practice Notes:

Devils forward Nathan Bastian practiced with his teammates for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury Nov. 26 vs. Washington. He had been skating on his own prior to joining the squad.
Forward Miles Wood was hurt during the practice and left early.

Devils head coach Lindy Ruff said Wood will join the team for their upcoming two-week, five-game road trip.
"I did see it. It didn't seem like anything major when it happened," Ruff said. "I had eyes on him when he was skating. He's making the trip so we'll see where he's at (Tuesday)."
Also joining the team on the road is Bastian.
"Good to see. First day he's back involved in full gear and part of practice drills," Ruff said. "He'll make the trip and we'll continue to push him along."
John Marino has yet to resume practicing with the club but will be on the upcoming road trip.

The Devils used some new looking lines (well, really the lines they ended with against the Rangers Saturday).

Star Star:

The incredible run that Devils
Jack Hughes
has been on of late is being recognized not just by those who follow the Devils closely but by the National Hockey League itself.
Over the course of the last week, on top of being named an NHL All-Star, Hughes has been named the NHL's Second Star of the Week.

Jack Celebration

Half Mark:

When the Devils play at Carolina Tuesday night to begin their five-game road swing, it'll be their 41st game of the season, marking the halfway mark on the year.
The club has had a remarkable run of success to start the 2022-23 campaign, which includes a 13-game winning streak. They sit in second place in the Metro Division with a 25-12-3 record for 53 points (four behind first place Carolina).
"We wanted to show growth. I think we have in the areas that we needed," Ruff said. "Defensively we needed to show growth. If you look at the numbers defensively, we're in a good place. We have to try to maintain that. Offensively, recently we've struggled a little bit to put the puck in the back of the net. The puck's starting to go now again."
The Devils' contest against Carolina could be a four-point swing and could help New Jersey climb closer to the top of the division.
"I think where we're at right now, we would have taken that 100 percent at the beginning of the year," captain Nico Hischier said.
The Devils have made incredible progress as individuals and a franchise in the opening half. But now is not the time to rest on their laurels.
"Maintaining a high level of defensive play, but finish the offensive opportunities," Ruff emphasized as the club's goals in the second half. "It's one thing to get (scoring chances), but we have to finish them. There's no secret, if you can get to three, four (goals) in a game, you're going to win most games. The games we've lost, we've struggled to get to two."

Road Tested:

It's never a bad time for a road, especially considering how well the Devils have been playing in visiting rinks this season. New Jersey is 14-2-1 on the road.
The Devils don't necessarily try to play differently depending on venue, but there is one overarching theme to the team's road play.
"I'd say we're a simpler team on the road and it has led to a lot of success," Ruff said. "We've done a better job on the road of executing the smaller details."
That's good news with the next five away from Newark.
"That's a big road trip for us. We're playing well on the road," Hischier said. "We just play smarter road games. We play with confidence. We play with a D-first mentality. We try not to make too many mistakes. That's how we were able to win games on the road.
"We're definitely trying to go out there and, as Jack would say, go on a heater again would be nice. We'll take it game by game. We have a big game against Carolina. If we win a game there then we'll be right there with them again."
