The sting of the Game 1 loss to the Hurricanes has to be in the rear-view mirror now. It's done with and the Devils know now it's about looking forward and preparing themselves for Game 2 of the Second Round series.

Today speaking with the media, Miles Wood, John Marino and Damon Severson all acknowledged the need for a better start and a better overall look as they prepare for Game 2.

The Devils were without forward Timo Meier in Game 1 and Lindy Ruff said today that he remains day-to-day. The club did not hold a full practice today and will be on the ice for a morning skate tomorrow before Game 2.

Similar Styles

When the New Jersey Devils are at their best, they tend to play a brand of hockey that is very similar to the Carolina Hurricanes. Last night, however, the Devils were on their toes, chasing the Hurricanes around, much like the Devils have done to their own opponents all season. That's where the next challenge begins, learning how to deal and adjust in a seven-game series to a team that looks awfully like yourselves.

"They skated really well, they were all over us right from the start," defenseman Damon Severson said. "Give them credit, they played well. For us worrying about our game, we didn't play our best. For us, we'll have to sharpen up there. I think a lot of our game is based on their speed and getting the puck out of their zone and playing in the O-Zone as much as possible. It's similar to us in that they can skate, and we can skate as well, it should be a matchup we have no issues with because of our speed and skill but we've just got to get to that sooner."

That statement was echoed by veteran forward Miles Wood.

"They compete very hard, we knew that heading into the series," Wood said, "They're well coached their depth is insane, even with two guys out, big players. They're a great team. Last night was not our best, we know that. We talked about it as a group this morning, so look fo a bounce back tomorrow."

The Best Is Yet to Come

The good news is it's still a seven-game series, no matter what the outcome of the first game was. What the Devils expect from themselves in their Game 2 performance is the best of themselves. Everyone has to elevate their game if they want to make a series of this.

"They haven't seen our best yet," Wood said, "I think our compete on pucks wasn't exactly there. For a man to a man, we know we can give a lot more. We just have to match their intensity."

The Devils feel they've learned their lesson in the First Round and have to take them into the second.

"I think we learned a lot in that first series," John Marino said, "We don't want to get to that point again, down 0-2. There are so many highest and lows, you want to stay away what there is online, you just want to go back to your game, what the winning hockey was of our game.

"It's going to be a completely different series," he continued. "I think we really learned that in Game 1. Completely different series, style of game, you know we're going to have to change some things after Game 1, compete on pucks a lot harder, they play a different way. We have to make those adjustments."
