PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, N.J. -Tonight will be a battle of two teams who have been performing exceptionally well offensively. In terms of goals per game, the Devils are fifth in the NHL in February, averaging four goals -- 32 goals in 8 games. Vancouver is third with 4.33 goals per game -- 39 goals in 9 contests.
"We're a pretty good team off the rush. We've scored a lot of rush goals this year. We've been scoring a lot and that's good. We've got to continue that," said Jack Hughes, adding that the team isn't coming into games with a more offensive mindset necessarily.
"We're not thinking about it too much. You're more worried about winning hockey games whether it's 2-1 or 5-4."
Devils head coach Lindy Ruff was also asked about the offensive surge.
"There's the small areas we've been a lot better at. Traffic around the net, our entries we're executing at a higher rate, shooting percentage has been better," Ruff began. "When we've had opportunities -- besides a couple breakaways last game -- we've been able to finish."
Defensively, the Devils have run on some hard times this month with 35 goals against but up until allowing three power play goals in Chicago, they had the second best penalty kill in the NHL in February at a 94.1% success rate. Ruff talked about letting the PK get away from them in Chicago.
"It's something we looked at," Ruff said. "We were a little off with our pressure. A couple reads we were not quite in the right position. For a good period of time, we were getting that key save at the right time. Maybe the Kane goal right off the bat we were getting that save. It was a little bit of a breakdown by us."
HUGHES BROTHERS CLASH
For the third time ever but first since 2019, the two Hughes brothers are going head-to-head. Jack has won the previous two contests over his brother Quinn.
"It'll be fun. Waited a long time since the last time. Should be a lot of fun and I'm excited playing," said Jack, adding that it's always going to be a fun time to battle his brother head-to-head.
"It'll be like that until we retire, right? Tonight's another great opportunity to pad my lead but we'll see how it goes," he stated. "We're both looking for a win. Getting away from me and Quinn, we need this one."
Rivalry aside, Jack talked about being able to see his brother both before this game but also after with the Canucks in the New York area until this Thursday.
"I saw him a couple nights ago before his Rangers game. We don't really get into it too much. It's hockey, it's a game. It's nice to see him," Jack said.
"We're lucky that the Islanders, Rangers and Devils are all right here so they'll be in the area for a week and we're able to hang out and go out for dinners. We're focused for tonight and we'll keep the buddy-buddy for later."
PROJECTED LINEUP
Not a lot was known about tonight's lineup with the morning skate being an optional. Nico Daws occupied the starter's net in goal though that isn't always a predictor of who may be between the pipes, particularly in an optional skate. On Sunday, the Devils held a full practice and the lineup was as follows:
Sharangovich - Hughes - Mercer
Zacha - Hischier - Bratt
Johnsson - Boqvist - Tatar
Vesey - McLeod - Bastian
Geertsen
Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Graves - Severson
White - Subban
Smith - Jaros
While it remains to be seen if Ty Smith will be in the press box for this one, Lindy Ruff talked about Colton White.
"He's a guy that has earned the right to be in the lineup," Ruff said.
"He really understands our system well. A lot of times that'll put you ahead of other plays. Details are good. He's got a great work ethic in practice. I think he understands what his role is when he does play. He keeps the game simple enough."
P.K. Subban spoke about being paired with White: "Part of my role on this team is playing with different players. Most of them are younger than me when I play with them. I think he just understands his game and the way he has to play to have success."
SUBBAN DESIGNED TONIGHT'S WARM-UP JERSEYS
Tonight's warm-up jerseys were designed in collaboration with P.K. Subban for Black History Month.

Subban eagerly awaits tonight's game with anticipation.
"I was approached about doing this and was pretty excited about it," Subban stated. "It was special to do it here with the history, specifically the black players. Tonight's going to be an exciting night."
Every player will be wearing the number 22, in honor of Willie O'Ree, the first Black player in the NHL.
"When we spoke about doing a jersey, incorporating Willie was a big part of it. That was important to me. My relationship with Willie. When I think back to my relationship with him, I think about to when I had a sit-down interview with him at ESPN when I played with Montreal and interact with him at the Winter Classic in Boston. I got to sit with his family.
"I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to do something like this. It's about all the players who have played and paved the way to play for us."
Other players featured on the jersey include Bryce Salvador (

), Claude Vilgrain (

), Sean Brown, Mark Fraser, Mike Grier, Johnny Oduya, Kevin Weekes, Wayne Simmonds, and Devante Smith-Pelly.
"Just trying to incorporate as many people as I can, as we can as an organization. I think we accomplished that. Both highlighting the Black players who have played in the game in the league and also with the Devils."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (18-29-5) vs. CANUCKS (26-22-6)
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET; Televised on MSG+
Head-to-Head
The Devils and Canucks haven't played each other since November 10, 2019. On that day, the Devils won 2-1 with Jesper Bratt netting the game winner.
Last time these two teams met at Prudential Center was October 19, 2019. The Devils won 1-0 with the only goal of the game being the first of Jack Hughes' career.
Devils team scope:
Offensively, the Devils have had a strong month of February with 32 goals scored in eight games.
Bratt remains the leading scorer on the Devils with 48 points in 47 games including a career-high 18 goals. In terms of points per game, Hughes is now the team leader with 36 points in 32 games (15 goals). Over an 82 game season, Hughes would output 38 goals and 92 points.
Canucks team scope:
Vancouver has been playing some of their best hockey of the season as of late. They've won five of their last six gamees, including an impressive 5-2 win on Sunday night against the New York Rangers.
J.T. Miller is the team's leading scorer with 20 goals and 59 points in 52 games. Jack's brother, defenseman Quinn Hughes, is second on the team in scoring with 41 points in 50 games.
The Canucks are three points behind Dallas and Edmonton for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
By the Numbers:
This season, the Devils have scored 32 goals in February (8 games), 33 goals in January (12 games), 33 goals in December (13 games), 37 goals in November (13 games) and 21 goals in October (7 games). Their previous best month offensively was November, averaging 2.84 goals per game but this month, the club has averaged 4.00. Despite the offensive showing, the club is only 3-5-0 in the month and that's largely because they've given up 35 for a 4.38 goals-against average.
Jack Hughes and Yegor Sharangovich both lead the way in February with four goals and six assists for 10 points. Sharangovich has played in all eight games while Hughes only played five, averaging two points per game.
Under head coach Bruce Boudreau, who was hired to replace Travis Green on December 7, the Canucks are 18-7-4 in the 29 games since the coaching change.
