SWITZERLAND , KAZAKHSTAN
Switzerland: Nico Hischier, Jonas Siegenthaler
After no goals in the first period for either team, Switzerland jumped out and scored two in the middle frame. Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler had an assist on the opening goal, which is his fourth helper of the tournament.
Kazakhstan scored a shorthanded tally to make it 2-1 in the opening six minutes of the third period, but Switzerland scored again to make it a two-goal lead halfway through the period. However, Kazakhstan kept pushing and made it a one-goal game again in the final two minutes. Switzerland was able to hold on for the win, its third straight victory to kick off the group stage.
Siegenthaler finished the game with one assist and 18:33 of total ice time, and almost scored an empty net goal in the final seconds of the game. Hischier played 20:04 in the win, had four shots on goal, and won 41% of his faceoffs.
With the win Switzerland is now tied with Canada at the top of the Group A standings with nine points.
Next: Switzerland will play Slovakia tomorrow in a matchup between Devils teammates with Hischier, Siegenthaler and Tatar all playing. Game time is 1:20 p.m. ET.
