LAS VEGAS, NV -Since being introduced to the NHL Skills Competition not too long ago, the Breakaway Challenge has had some fun goals and more than a few surprises.
Arguably, however, nothing has ever been as surprising as Jack Hughes' breakaway challenge at this year's NHL All-Star Skills Competition in Las Vegas.

"I was brainstorming things 'Vegasy' and a black box is one of them. Frosty was talking to me and Brekk was going to show up," Hughes said, noting that Chris Scoppetto is acting as the head equipment manager this weekend for the Metropolitan Division. "I don't know how it came about but it ended up really good. You know, it's all about Brekk. If he had a lot of fun and I think he had a lot of fun."
Brekken responded in the affirmative on whether or not he had fun.
"It was fun," Brekken smiled. "I was a little nervous in the beginning but in the end it was fun and I had a good time.
Brekken was asked how much he practiced the move that he eventually scored on.
"Maybe for like an hour once and that's about it really," he answered.
Jack added that the two skated for a little in anticipation of the moment.
"We got on the ice last week and skated and practiced a bit and hung out."
Hughes' magic trick performance earned high praise from the six judges, with five 10s and a 9 to put them in front with 59 total points. The only reason they didn't win was judge Jon Hamm gave Alex Pietrangelo a 19 (in honor of Pietrangelo leading Hamm's beloved St. Louis Blues to a Stanley Cup in 2019) to win it for the Vegas blueliner with 64 points.
"I think we got snubbed a little bit," Jack chuckled. "But it's all good. It's all fun."
Prior to Hughes picking up 59 points, his childhood friend Trevor Zegras pulled off an incredible move while doing a blindfolded send-off of the movie Dodgeball. Zegras had 58 points to be in the lead at that point.
"I didn't really see it because I was in the tunnel but I think it was sick," said Hughes. "It just shows his skill and his personality. He's going to be a great ambassador for the league for awhile."
Overall, Jack thought the entire event was a spectacle that you wouldn't normally see in hockey.
"It was pretty nerve wracking for all of us. I mean, we're hockey players. It was pretty outrageous, showing some crazy stuff."
