Loughlin Resch Speak of Devil

Devils radio network color analyst Chico Resch can still remember the worst game he ever called.
It was in his post-playing and early-broadcasting career while calling Devils games on television. The team was playing in Vancouver, and Resch almost didn't make it back to New Jersey as a result.
"There were 13 shots. It was the most boring game. I wasn't good. We flew to Edmonton the next day," Resch told the Speak of the Devils podcast. "I got on the phone (with Pete Silverman) and he ripped me. He goes 'What were you doing? You hurt the whole team. You were so bad.'"
That's when a coworker at the network informed Resch that Silverman told him to leave Resch in Edmonton instead of having him return home with the team. It was a tactic previously done to send a message. Though Resch wasn't left in Alberta, he did get the message.
"That was my lowest point. I wanted to quit," Resch said. "I thought I was no good at this. Fortunately, I didn't."

And by his fourth season on air, Resch started to find his groove. And that was the year that he knew he could make it as a broadcaster.
"Every summer I'd say to my wife, I don't know if I can go back," Resch said. "But you're only a quitter if you quit. If you keep trying, you're never a quitter, even if you don't succeed.
"You get in there and be as bad as you can be, which I was on some nights. But fortunately, the Devils were good. That helped. I had Doc (Emrick). Doc was good and would carry me. I think by the fourth year I was away from the game enough."
Resch and fellow RWJ Barnabas Health Devils radio network partner Matt Loughlin joined the podcast to touch on several different topics…
