PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ -A lot of the talk on Tuesday after morning skate was about the Devils penalty kill.
It currently sits at 28th in the League, but showed more signs of life against the Islanders on Sunday night. The Devils kill went 2-for-2, helping the club win 2-0 and rise to 3-1-1 on the season.
"It's something we've got to continue to work on," said Head Coach Lindy Ruff. "We've used a lot of different personnel. I've tried a lot of different players and we tried to lock onto combinations of players. And at practice we went over it again, it was more about penalty killing and where we could pressure. And I thought we did a great job on that second kill against the Islanders where we were on top of people."
And it doesn't get any easier tonight with the 12th-best power play coming to town. Often times in these physical, rivalry matchups it's special teams that can make or break you.
"These guys have a good power play," said Devils defenseman Damon Severson. "They've been together for a while. They can move the puck around. I mean, a lot of teams have good power plays in the league. A lot of teams have skilled, high-end players. It's definitely a key to every game. You want to stay out of the box. "You want to win your special teams battle. If we can do that, we should be successful on most nights. So that's something we're really going to key in on, for sure."
ATTA WAY, ROOK
"He's a good Western Canadian kid," Severson said of Ty Smith.
The 2018 17th overall pick has been on fire of late and is one-point tonight away from tying an NHL record for a point streak to begin a defenseman's career. He has at least one point in five straight games.
It's impressing his teammates and defensive colleagues.
"So I've known him for a few years now and have run into him a couple of times in the summer over there," said Severson. "You could see he's a smart power-play mind, smart puck-mover, and just does things the right way. He's not the biggest guy, not the strongest guy, but he knows what his skill set is. And he tries to really take advantage of that. So you gotta give him credit. He's had a heck of a start for us and he's made a good impression on a lot of the guys. A lot of positives from Ty so far, especially on the offensive side. If he can keep up his pace, he's going to be point-per-game player this year."
WEDGE-WALL
Scott Wedgewood has filled in admirably these past two games with Mackenzie Blackwood on the COVID-19 protocol list. He stopped all 28 shots he faced in the Devils 2-0 victory over the Islanders last game out.
It was a big bounce back from the team's 4-1 loss the previous game.
"Wedge did a great job," said Severson. "We didn't give him a much support in the Islanders game at the Islanders. And last game, there were a few times, obviously, you're gonna have to make key saves in a game. And he made those key saves. Obviously, ended up with the shutouts. So we have a lot of confidence in him. We have a lot of confidence in both of our goalies right now."
The Devils will need Wedgewood, should he start again, and good team defensive play tonight if they want to keep the good vibes rolling against the Flyers.
"They've got some real good skill off the rush," said Ruff. "They have some depth in their lines, some good shooters. I think, again, our puck management, which I thought we did a lot better job with and it helped us prevent a lot of real good opportunities by some of the key Islander players. It will be the same tonight where we have to precent the same type of opportunities with some of the Flyers top players."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (3-1-1) VS. FLYERS (3-2-1)
TV: MSG+ at 7:00 PM ET
Head-to-Head:
The Devils face the Flyers for the first time in eight meetings tonight. Last season, they met on three occasions with the Flyers winning twice (once in a shootout) and Devils once.
Miles Wood led the Devils with two goals in three games while Sean Couturier had two goals and an assist for three points for the Flyers.
Devils Team Scope:
On Sunday, the Devils defeated the Islanders 2-0 for their third win of the season. They now sit 3-1-1 through their first five games, one point behind Washington and Pittsburgh for top spot in the East Division but with a game in hand on both.
Jack Hughes leads the Devils with three goals and seven points through five games. Rookie defenseman Ty Smith is second with a goal and six points. Smith has a point in each of the five games he's played in his NHL career, all this season.
Flyers Team Scope:
The Flyers are in a three-way tie for third place in the East Division with seven points and a 3-2-2 record. Their most recent game was this past Saturday, a 6-1 thumping by the Bruins. They lost both games to the Bruins in their two-game set in Boston with the other coming in a shootout.
Kevin Hayes leads the Flyers with eight points through six games. Travis Konecny is the team's leading goal scorer with five. He has seven points on the season.
In goal, Carter Hart has had a bit of a rocky start to the season with a 4.18 goals-against average and .880 save percentage.
By the Numbers:
The NHL record for games with a point to start a career for a defenseman is held by Marek Zidlicky, who had a point in six straight games for the Nashville Predators in 2003. Smith could tie that with a point tonight. ... Hughes is only three points off the NHL lead in scoring. Mitch Marner, Connor McDavid and Anze Kopitar each have 10 points. Konecny and Jakob Voracek each also have seven points for the Flyers while Hayes has eight.
Injury Update:
Devils: Nico Hischier (leg) is out; Mackenzie Blackwood (COVID-19 protocol) is out; Aaron Dell, Sami Vatanen and Jesper Bratt are awaiting the completion of the visa and quarantine process
Flyers: Kirill Ustimenko (hip) is on IR; Isaac Ratcliffe (fractured rib) is on IR; Wade Allison (undisclosed) is on IR; Shayne Gostisbehere (COVID-19 protocol) is day-to-day; Sean Couturier (costochondral separation) is day-to-day; Morgan Frost (shoulder) is on IR; Philippe Myers (fractured rib) is day-to-day.
