For the first time in the 39-year history of New Jersey High School Hockey in the Garden State, the New Jersey Devils will stand side-by-side with players, coaches and fans providing unprecedented coverage beginning with cup and conference tournaments, and throughout the 2017 NJSIAA finals and beyond, as part of its One Jersey Grassroots Initiative.
Princeton Day was crowned Prep B champions with a 2-1 triumph over Morristown-Beard on Feb. 8, but there are still 15 more cup and conference champions waiting to be anointed across the state.
Beginning today, four new champions will be crowned including the Dowd and Handchen Cups in the Shore Conference and Mennen and Haas Cups in the MCSSIHL. Seven more champions, including the winner of the prestigious Gordon Cup, will be decided on Friday, Feb. 17 with another four more titlists to be anointed on Saturday, Feb. 18.
"The New Jersey Devils remain committed to the development and expansion of youth and high school hockey in the Garden State," Devils' President Hugh Weber said. "The Devils will host, recognize and congratulate each one of the three state champions as well as all 16 cup and conference champions at an upcoming game at Prudential Center during the 2016-17 season."
Recognizing all 19 champions is just the start of what is planned to support the top high school teams and players in New Jersey.
The field for the 59th annual Gordon Cup, the oldest tournament in the state which predates the NJSIAA finals by two decades, is set for Codey Arena in West Orange with a puck drop of 7 p.m. Beginning in 1959, the Gordon Cup is one of the most cherished trophies in all of sports -- and also one of the toughest to win.
