Killin' It
The Devils penalty kill not only went 3-for-3 against a highly skilled Vancouver power play, but also chipped in a shorthanded goal from Dawson Mercer.
The Devils PK unit is still finding its way but has killed off five straight man-advantage tries.
“We’ve done a good job of being connected. Power plays are starting to throw different looks at us,” defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic said. “We’re doing a good job communicating to adjust to that. You don’t always see the looks if you’re looking at the puck.”
Part of that communication comes from the defensemen themselves, as they have the perfect vantage point to see how power play units are motioning in the attack.
“As defensemen we have that responsibility on the back line,” Kovacevic said.
“You usually see most things in front of you. It’s your responsibility to call it out to everyone.”
As far as being vocal, the goaltending tandem of Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen always make their voices heard.
“Both of our goalies are the best talkers,” Kovacevic said. “It’s fun. Sometimes you’ll make a good play and they’re hyping you up. Sometimes they’re the best cheerleaders.”
The PK also boasts some offensive punch. Mercer scored the shorthanded goal, but the unit also features Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt. All three of those players also contribute on the power play, which is an asset for any penalty killer.
“I know myself, coming from the power play I know what’s annoying in a PK,” Bratt said. “I try to be that guy on the ice.”
