Fleury turned aside all eight shots he faced in the first period including a sprawling save on Nathan MacKinnon who fired a shot on goal from the high slot with three minutes to play in the period. With less than a minute to go in the opening frame, Fleury flew from his right to his left, stacked his pads, and reached up with his left arm to deny a wide-open shot from Nazem Kadri that would have given Colorado the lead.
"I always love a two-pad stack once in a while," Fleury said after the game. "It's always fun, especially when you stop it."
Early in the second, Fleury made back-to-back stops on Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Matt Calvert as the Avalanche tried to break through. Alex Tuch scored a pair of goals and Jonathan Marchessault added another to provide some cushioning for the Golden Knights on the scoreboard. Colorado came up empty on 11 shots in the middle stanza.
On a Colorado power play early in the third period, Fleury squared up to a bid from Cale Makar that came in low to the stick side. Midway through the frame, the Vegas goaltender made another pair of saves in quick succession as he denied Bellemare and a point-blank try from Devon Toews.
Fleury made 15 saves in the third period as he locked down his 64th career shutout. Even with his heroic performance, he gave credit to his teammates.
"I think the goalie is part of it, but the guys have been doing a great job of blocking shots," Fleury said. "They're not giving them too much; they're getting clears and they're not letting them walk into the slot. It's a great effort by the guys in front of me."
