Mike Foligno: 5 Fun Facts

The Foligno name is a popular one in hockey.
These days, most of that attention is bestowed on Nick Foligno, an NHL All-Star and captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Marcus Foligno, a forward with the Buffalo Sabres.
Before either Nick or Marcus skated in the NHL, their father, Mike, made the Foligno name famous. Mike Foligno, now a professional scout with Las Vegas's NHL team, was an elite NHL goal scorer in the 1980s.

Playing parts of 15 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers, Foligno scored 355 times in the NHL, maxing out with 41 as a member of the Sabres in 1985-86.

In the process, Foligno patented the "Foligno Leap," which became one of the most iconic signature celebrations in hockey.
Here are five fun facts to get to know Foligno better.

1. His two sons, Nick and Marcus, are established NHL players.

Also has two daughters, Lisa and Cara. Lisa played lacrosse at Canisius College, while Cara currently works in marketing for the Buffalo Sabres.

2. He has other relatives with established NHL legacies.

His uncle-in-law is Eddie Giacomin, a Hockey Hall of Fame goalie most known for his stint with the New York Rangers (1965-75).
Foligno's nephew-in-law is Wade Redden, a recently retired former NHL All-Star whose best years were as a defenseman with the Ottawa Senators in the early 2000s.

3. Was captain of the Buffalo Sabres from 1988-91.

During his Sabres career, Don Luce was first Buffalo's assistant coach, and then longtime Director of Player Personnel. Luce's son, Scott, is currently Las Vegas's NHL team's Director of Amateur Scouting.

4. Spent part of his childhood in Italy.

Although his family would eventually settle in Sudbury, Ont., Foligno was an avid soccer player as a child in Italy.

5. Has been either a head coach or an assistant coach for eight different teams, spread across three leagues.
