McPhee is most known as the Washington Capitals' general manager from 1997-2014, but also more recently as a Special Adviser with the New York Islanders.

Here are seven fun facts about McPhee.

1. As an executive with the Vancouver Canucks, he helped acquire Murray Craven from the Hartford Whalers in 1993.

Craven is currently serving as a Special Adviser to Las Vegas owner Bill Foley, his longtime friend.

2. Drafted Alexander Ovechkin No. 1 overall in 2004.

In addition to drafting Ovechkin, McPhee housed Ovechkin with his family during the Russian forward's rookie season, 2005-06.

3. Won the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's top player as a senior with Bowling Green in 1982.
4. Played 115 career NHL games with the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils.

Making his NHL debut with the Rangers during the 1983 playoffs, McPhee's first NHL coach was Herb Brooks, who coached the "Miracle on Ice" team that won gold medals at the 1980 Olympics.

5. His son, Graham, was drafted in the fifth round by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2016 NHL Draft.
