It was a concept that wasn't entirely clear to some.
At 12:00 (PT) on Saturday, an NHL roster freeze went into effect, lasting until Thursday morning. However, teams are still permitted to make moves with the Golden Knights during that stretch.
So not quite a "freeze" as much as it's limiting the amount of player movement that can occur while the Golden Knights are in the process of making their Expansion Draft selections.
Another wrinkle of this "freeze" is that the Golden Knights are permitted to begin exclusively negotiating with free agents. In short, while other teams cannot participate in free agency until July 1, Vegas can immediately begin signing free agents.

The catch being that if the Golden Knights sign a player during this stretch, they won't be able to select any additional players from that team during the Expansion Draft.

While George McPhee has not provided any hints as to who or how many free agents he may be negotiating with, he did confirm on Sunday that there are "some" players that team has spoken to.
"We're focusing on everything," McPhee said. "We're talking to unrestricted free agents, we're talking to restricted free agents, and we continue to talk to teams."
