VEGAS (January 30, 2017) - Vegas Golden Knights General Manager George McPhee announced today, January 30, that the team has hired Jay Mellette as their Director of Sports Performance and Head Athletic Trainer. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Mellette joins the Golden Knights after spending the last 12 years with Cirque du Soleil, most recently as their Director of Performance Medicine.
As the Golden Knights Director of Sports Performance and Head Athletic Trainer, Mellette will oversee the daily administration of the curative, preventative and performance enhancement services delivered by the Golden Knights Sports Performance staff. Mellette will also be responsible for ensuring that Golden Knights players receive appropriate, comprehensive and effective sports performance services.

"His impressive tenure at Cirque du Soleil along with his experience in the Armed Forces will impact our organization in a meaningful way. Trainers and sports performance staff play a vital role in the success of any professional team and we are excited to have Jay help direct our efforts in this area."

Mellette brings 17 years of experience working with international athletes and international coaches to the Golden Knights organization. As the Director of Performance Medicine at Cirque du Soleil, Mellette oversaw the care, prevention and rehabilitation services for over 1300 athletes and staff. He was instrumental in building a culture of conditioning, creating the concussion protocols, developing an injury prevention program portfolio, and delivering quality clinical outcomes and analysis. He also has extensive experience leading worldwide medical network development and constructing high functioning multidisciplinary teams.
Before becoming a sports medicine professional, Mellette was an active duty member of the United States Air Force where he was the recipient of the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the National Defense Service Medal. Prior to serving in the Air Force, his years of experience working in university sports and in Major League Soccer were foundational to the development of his vision of an integrated athlete-centered approach to healthcare and performance management.
Mellette is a licensed athletic trainer and performance enhancement specialist who holds a Bachelor's degree from Florida State University and a Master's degree from Regis University. He has been an active member in his profession having spent the last five years as a member of the International Committee for the National Athletic Trainers Association. Jay, his wife Stephanie, and their four dogs reside in Las Vegas.
