The New York Islanders needed a shootout, but outlasted the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 in a high-scoring game at UBS Arena on Tuesday night.
Kyle Palmieri scored the game-deciding goal in the shootout, while Zach Parise and Josh Bailey each scored two goals in regulation to lift the Islanders to a victory, as the Isles opened up a home-and-home series against their Metropolitan Division rivals. Jake Guentzel had a three-point night (2G, 1A), while Danton Heinen and Jeff Carter also put up goals for Pittsburgh.
The Penguins outshot the Islanders 47-37 on Tuesday night and were able to pick up a point in the loss.
Ilya Sorokin made a career-high 43 saves in the victory. Sorokin's record on home ice improved to 13-4-3.
