Today, a snapshot of the Chicago Blackhawks at the pause:

Chicago Blackhawks

Record: 32-30-8, 72 points

Playoff position: Six points behind Nashville Predators and Vancouver Canucks for second wild card into Stanley Cup Playoffs from Western Conference.

The Blackhawks were expected to struggle in the tough Central Division, and they have. They've shown glimpses of getting into the playoff race, including their season-high winning streak of five games Jan. 11-19, but haven't been able to gain steady traction.

Patrick Kane again leads the Blackhawks in points with 84 (33 goals, 51 assists) in 70 games; he led them in scoring the previous four seasons. Alex DeBrincat (45 points; 18 goals, 27 assists) hasn't found the same touch after scoring 41 goals last season. Dylan Strome has 38 points (12 goals, 26 assists) after he had 51 points (17 goals, 34 assists) in 58 games for Chicago after being acquired in a trade from the Arizona Coyotes on Nov. 25, 2018.

Statement win

Blackhawks 5, Winnipeg Jets 2, Jan. 19:The Blackhawks won their fifth consecutive game when they defeated the Jets at United Center. It was a great night for Kane, who got his 1,000th NHL point with the primary assist on Brandon Saad's goal at 14:14 of the third period. Kane's teammates came off the bench to swarm him, an idea from captain Jonathan Toews that was permitted after he checked with officials before the game.

Most compelling game

Florida Panthers 4, Blackhawks 3, Jan. 21:Two days after Kane's milestone point, former Chicago coach Joel Quenneville returned to United Center for the first time since being fired Nov. 6, 2018. Quenneville, who guided the Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015, looked like he was fighting emotions when a video tribute was played in the arena during the first TV timeout and the crowd gave him a standing ovation. The Panthers responded with a win, their sixth in a row.
