Wilson, Ovechkin score for Capitals' win over Bruins

WASHINGTON --Lars Eller scored the go-ahead goal and had an assist for the Washington Capitals in a 4-2 win against the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena on Sunday.

John Carlson had a goal and an assist, Tom Wilson and Alex Ovechkin scored, and Vitek Vanecek made 30 saves for the Capitals (40-22-10), who have won three in a row after losing their previous two games by a combined score of 11-2.
"This week, we put together three really strong games with various challenges, some guys coming in and out and I just think, really good team effort," Eller said. "Played well with and without the puck … I think we've got a good feeling in the room right now after this week."
Washington is four points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for third in the Metropolitan Division and 15 ahead of the New York Islanders for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.
The Capitals blocked 25 shots and killed all four Bruins power plays.
"Guys jumping in front of pucks. That's what it's like at the end of the year as you're going in the playoffs," coach Peter Laviolette said. "For me, that has to be the commitment. Defense is the priority. If you're good defensively, I think we feel like we can score some goals."

BOS@WSH: Eller scores from tough angle

Curtis Lazar and Erik Haula scored, and Linus Ullmark made 28 saves for the Bruins (45-22-5), who have lost two of three. Boston fell one point behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for third in the Atlantic Division after Tampa Bay won 5-0 against the Buffalo Sabres later Sunday.
"The League is tightening up and we're getting to play for keeps here, so every game is a learning curve and I think as a whole we just need to expect a little bit more of ourselves and continue to improve and build," Lazar said.
Eller gave the Capitals a 3-2 lead at 7:18 of the third period when his attempted centering pass deflected off Haula's skate and past Ullmark.
"Tough bounce," Haula said. "It was just kind of the story in the third. I think they were the better team in the third and that was the difference in the game. It was a pretty even game, I thought, overall. But then (in the third) they had the better chances."
Trent Frederic appeared to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 7:01 of the first, but the goal was overturned after a video review confirmed that Frederic kicked the puck into Washington's net.
Carlson then put the Capitals ahead 1-0 at 4:11 of the second with his third goal in three games, a slap shot over Ullmark's glove from the top of the right circle.
"We don't have any room to lay off the gas," Carlson said. "We're in a tight race. We know that if we played like we were down the stretch here, our season's going to be really short."
The Bruins tied it 1-1 at 7:55 when Nick Foligno skated around Vanecek and found Lazar for the tip in.
"[Folgino] deked out the goalie and I was just trying to read if he was trying to go around the far side or get it back to the short side," Lazar said. "My favorite place to be is in that blue paint and I was able to whack it in and it was a big goal for us."

BOS@WSH: Carlson puts Capitals ahead in 2nd

Haula gave Boston a 2-1 lead at 8:55 after Charlie McAvoy controlled a Washington turnover in the neutral zone.
Tom Wilson tied it 2-2 at 14:50. He put in a rebound after Ullmark made the initial save on Eller but couldn't immediately find the puck.
After Eller put Washington back in front, Ovechkin shot into an empty net with two seconds left in the third for the 4-2 final. It was his 45th of the season and 775th of his NHL career.
