The goalie is expected to need six months to recover. He missed 14 games this season with a lower-body injury and allowed five goals on 37 shots in a 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.
"This is an injury that Joonas has been dealing with for some time and it has now gotten to the point where surgery is the best option," Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said Thursday. "We are disappointed for him, as he has worked extremely hard to be able to play, but this is the best course of action."
Korpisalo was 7-11-0 with a 4.15 goals-against average and an .877 save percentage in 22 games (17 starts) this season. He is 76-67-21 with a 3.04 GAA, .902 save percentage and three shutouts in 182 games (164 starts) in seven seasons with Columbus.
The Blue Jackets (32-29-3) are 13 points behind the Washington Capitals for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.
