Hurricanes at Flyers | Recap

PHILADELPHIA -- Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov each had a goal and an assist, and the Carolina Hurricanes won their fifth straight game, 4-1 against the Philadelphia Flyers at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Sunday.

Mark Jankowski extended his goal streak to four games, Shayne Gostisbehere also scored and William Carrier had two assists for the Hurricanes (5-1-1), who were coming off a 5-2 win at the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. Pyotr Kochetkov made 18 saves.

Carolina played without captain Jordan Staal because of a lower-body injury.

"We've had a lot of hockey here in a short amount of time, and then we've got a couple guys out that are big parts, and other guys are just stepping up," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "Got 20 guys tonight that just did enough. A couple big plays, a couple good individual efforts that you always need, and get the win."

Christian Dvorak scored for the Flyers (0-5-2), who lost their seventh straight game to open the season, a franchise record. Joseph Woll made 26 saves.

Philadelphia was coming off a 5-1 loss at the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

"We know we've got to turn it around ASAP," Dvorak said. "Got to try not to let it snowball here and focus on the next one. We showed at times tonight what we can do, just got to be consistent with it."

Carolina's top line of Aho, Svechnikov and Carrier had a hand in the Hurricanes' three second-period goals, all of which came in a span of 6:38.

It's a line that was put together early in the season while Seth Jarvis is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

"Quality people, No. 1, and players," Brind'Amour said. "They all have a little different skill sets, but Will especially, he just does it right all the time, and he's hard to play against. You put that together with you know 'Svech' and obviously 'Fishy' (Aho) has got a high skill level."

Svechnikov gave Carolina a 1-0 lead at 10:16 of the second period when he scored in transition from the left face-off circle.

Gostisbehere was the beneficiary of that line's strong play to put the Hurricanes ahead 2-0 at 13:45. Carrier carried the puck into the Flyers zone on the right side, pulled up and found Aho driving through the slot. Aho passed between the skates of Flyers defenseman Oliver Bonk across to Gostisbehere, who scored from the bottom of the left face-off circle.

"It's three unique players on one line," Gostisbehere said. "Obviously Will's the physical presence and he's going to be heavy on the forecheck getting pucks, and even saw tonight he made some really good plays. Obviously Svech is a big shooter, and another guy who's relentless on the forecheck, and Fish is all world. You saw it on his goal and my goal. That was a freebie for me."

Dvorak made it 2-1 at 15:26. Denver Barkey controlled the puck on the right side of the Hurricanes zone and sent it back to Nick Seeler at the left point. His shot went off Dvorak in the left slot and past Kochetkov.

Aho scored at 16:54 to make it 3-1. Svechnikov held the puck in at the Flyers blue line and pushed it ahead to Carrier, who skated through the middle of the offensive zone and found Aho, who has 11 points (six goals, five assists) during a six-game point streak.

"We were coming there, it was 2-1, and obviously the third goal was obviously a dejected goal," Flyers coach Rick Tocchet said.

Jankowski made it 4-1 at 15:09 of the third period. Seeler blocked a Jordan Martinook shot, and the puck caromed to Jankowski, who scored from the high slot to extend his goal streak to four (four goals).
