Pavelski gets 4 points, Stars cruise past Devils, 5-1

NEWARK, N.J. -- Joe Pavelski had two goals and two assists for the Dallas Stars in a 5-1 win against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Tuesday.

Pavelski, who extended his point streak to six games (four goals, nine assists), will represent the Stars at the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Feb. 5.
"I think it's a mindset on why he gets it done year after year," Stars defenseman Ryan Suter said. "Joe has it ... a great mindset. He's like a fine wine, I guess."
Roope Hintz scored for the fourth straight game, and Braden Holtby made 36 saves for the Stars (22-16-2), who swept a four-game road trip. They won 3-1 at the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.
"We did a lot of good things against a team that can be really dangerous," Pavelski said. "Guys were chipping in on this road trip and it was huge for us with the scoring we got from different lines."

DAL@NJD: Pavelski strikes 14 seconds into 1st period

Jesper Bratt scored for the Devils (15-21-5), who went 1-3-0 on a four-game homestand. Akira Schmid, making his first start since Dec. 18, was pulled after allowing three goals on seven shots in the first period. Jon Gillies made 23 saves in relief.
"I think they outplayed us the whole game," Devils defenseman Damon Severson said. "It wasn't fun to go down early, and then get scored on early again to start the second period. You just dig yourself a hole."
Pavelski gave the Stars a 1-0 lead 14 seconds into the first period when Jason Robertson passed to him in the slot after Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler lost his edge behind the net.
"It's fun to get off to a start like that where we're scoring early and often," Pavelski said. "It's just trying to get the puck in deep, forecheck, and go to work."
Jacob Peterson scored on a backhand from the slot after a pass from Alexander Radulov from behind the net to give Dallas a 2-0 lead at 9:45.
Pavelski made it 3-0 on a deflection in front at 16:48.
"Joe's consistency at his age (37) is what impresses me," Stars coach Rick Bowness said. "What you see today you're seeing pretty much every game. Like I keep telling people, this is not a fluke. He works at it. He's always the first guy out there working out around the net. He's a true pro, great character, and a great teammate."

DAL@NJD: Pavelski scores second goal of 1st period

Hintz scored on a wrist shot from the right face-off circle 15 seconds into the second period to increase the lead to 4-0.
The line of Robertson, Hintz and Pavelski combined for seven points (three goals, four assists) and nine shots.
"We've played the right way, we've gotten a little bit of puck luck along the way, some bounces, but we've worked to get multiple chances," Pavelski said of his line. "In this league, you find out you kind of need a couple good chances just to get one, and the guys are playing hard."
Bratt scored a power-play goal on a snap shot from the left face-off circle to pull the Devils within 4-1 at 12:16.
"They keep the puck along the wall, and a couple of lines are really quick," Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. "I think they know their strength is keeping the puck out of the danger areas ... every puck went deep."

DAL@NJD: Hintz scores 15 seconds into 2nd period

Holtby made 16 saves in the third period, including a sprawling stop against Dawson Mercer at 10:54.
"[Holtby] was really good," Pavelski said. "He made that amazing save at the end when the score is still 4-1. I think the biggest thing tonight was his calmness. There weren't many rebounds, and he was handling the puck well. When you get that kind of control out of your goalie, it definitely goes a long way."
Jani Hakanpaa scored an empty-net goal at 17:35 for the 5-1 final.
