DAL@VAN: Miller cranks heavy slap shot for PPG

VANCOUVER -- J.T. Miller scored two power-play goals, and the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Dallas Stars 6-3 at Rogers Arena on Sunday.

Bo Horvat and Elias Pettersson each had a goal and two assists, and Quinn Hughes had three power-play assists for the Canucks (5-6-1), who won for the second time through six games of a seven-game homestand. Thatcher Demko made 25 saves.
Vancouver ended an 0-for-17 power-play slump over the previous four games and finished 3-for-6 on the power play, matching their goal total with the man-advantage from the previous seven games combined.
"We weren't really having fun on the power play anymore," Miller said. "We didn't want to be stagnant and robotic. We had to start throwing something in there. We decided to throw a little bit more movement in today. Tonight, we looked like an elite power play, but we just can't do it one time and feel good. We have to come out with the same urgency the next game."

DAL@VAN: Miller wires home a quick wrister for PPG

Ryan Suter had a goal and an assist, Jason Robertson had two assists, and Anton Khudobin made 30 saves for the Stars (4-5-2), who have one win in their past six games (1-3-2).
Dallas is the only team in the NHL without a win in regulation this season.
"We're not even close to being the Dallas Stars we need to be. We try to play run and gun, that's what it looks like," coach Rick Bowness said. "Just have to get their attention and get them buying in and if they don't buy in, they shouldn't play."
Demko made a diving save with the paddle of his stick to deny Jamie Benn on a 2-on-1 at 12:10 of the first period, but Joe Pavelski scored on a backdoor power-play pass from Robertson to make it 1-0 at 13:35.
Miller scored on a screened wrist shot to tie it 1-1 at 2:19 of the second period.
"It was great," Pettersson said of Miller's goal. "It set us up with confidence to score."
Pettersson scored his first goal in 10 games on another screened power-play wrist shot to put Vancouver ahead 2-1 at 6:37.
"We had a good talk this morning. Everybody has to be a shooter, simplify," Pettersson said. "We have to continue to have that mentality, to snap it around, move it quick, change positions, be shooters."

DAL@VAN: Pettersson powers home wrist shot for PPG

Horvat scored on a rebound to make it 3-1 at 8:10.
"We've got to win a 1-0 game, a 2-1 game. We need that mentality," Pavelski said. "We can be a little bit more patient at times. There's nights where it seems like you're trying to do too much, probably, and we've got to really settle back into our team game and work out of this together."
Luke Glendening scored from inside the right face-off dot after getting behind the Canucks defense off the rush at 9:38 to pull Dallas to 3-2.
Vancouver failed to convert a 5-on-3 for 1:11, with Khudobin robbing Pettersson twice, but rookie Vasily Podkolzin scored on a 2-on-1 at 15:45 to make it 4-2.
"The guys did a great job on the 5-on-3, and we've got everything going our way and then we turn the puck over at the blue line and all of a sudden it's 4-2," Bowness said. "We're beating ourselves."
Suter scored on a power-play point shot that changed direction in front 3:23 into the third period to make it 4-3. It's the fourth straight game Vancouver's 29th-ranked penalty kill has surrendered two goals.
Miller made it 5-3 with a power-play one-timer at 13:44, and Brock Boeser scored into an empty net with 2:21 left for the 6-3 final.
"We're going to have to fix the penalty kill, we're going to have to fix the discipline, and we're going to have to fix the consistency with which we play the game," Bowness said.
NOTES: Khudobin started consecutive games for the first time this season ahead of Braden Holtby, who was bought out by the Canucks in the offseason and signed with Dallas as a free agent on July 28. … Vancouver forward Justin Dowling was minus-1 while playing 8:16 in his first game back after missing five with an undisclosed injury. … Canucks defenseman Luke Schenn missed the game with an undisclosed injury; Kyle Burroughs, who was a healthy scratch the previous three games, was minus-1 with three hits playing 13:55 in his place on the third defense pair.
