Boldy powers Wild past Devils in overtime

NEWARK, N.J. -- Matt Boldy scored on a breakaway with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Minnesota Wild a 2-1 win against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Tuesday.

Boldy's breakaway chance off his backhand came immediately after Devils forward Jack Hughes hit the post.
"I didn't know there was that little amount of time," Boldy said. "I didn't know it was going to be 1.3 seconds, but it was really nice just because I was able to kind of make my own read, make my move that I wanted to make."

Filip Gustavsson made an NHL career-high 47 saves for the Wild (41-22-8), who have won nine of 12 and extended their road point streak to nine games, dating to Feb. 23 (7-0-2).
Minnesota is tied with the Dallas Stars for first in the Central Division following Dallas' 5-4 overtime loss to the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday.
"It's just so much fun to win," Gustavsson said. "Anyone that likes losing shouldn't be doing sports. It was really close (on the winner). I don't know if there was five seconds when [Boldy] got the puck. I guess he's been working out a lot this summer and skating super-fast, so it was fun to see he got a shot on net."
Vitek Vanecek made 27 saves for the Devils (45-18-8), who are 4-2-2 in their past eight games.
New Jersey is two points behind the Carolina Hurricanes, who have two games in hand, for first in the Metropolitan Division after Carolina's 3-2 victory at the New York Rangers on Tuesday.
"It was a tight game," Vanecek said. "It's frustrating, but what are you going to do? I didn't look at the clock. I was just focused on the breakaway."

MIN@NJD: Shaw breaks the stalemate in the 3rd

Mason Shaw gave the Wild a 1-0 lead at 6:41 of the third period on a wraparound inside the right post.
Timo Meier tied it 1-1 at 12:08 when his wraparound attempt at the right post deflected off Minnesota defenseman Jake Middleton and off the skate of Gustavsson. It was Meier's fourth goal with the Devils after being acquired from the San Jose Sharks on Feb. 26.
"Both goalies were good," New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff said. "I thought, offensively, we left some really key plays out there. I look at the 3-on-1 in regulation, I look at the 3-on-1 in overtime ... we generated some opportunities. We stayed with it, tied it up, so you take the point and we've got to move on."
Gustavsson made 10 saves in the first period, including three during a Devils power play.
"I just think it was a great hockey game," Wild coach Dean Evason said. "There was nothing cheap. It was hard, guys played fast. They're a great team, obviously, and we played really well in order to give ourselves a chance to win in the end."

MIN@NJD: Meier ties the game 1-1 in the 3rd

Vanecek made eight saves in the first, including consecutive stops against Boldy and Joel Eriksson Ek from the slot at 18:33.
Vanecek made a glove save, one of his 11 stops in the second period, on a wrist shot by Frederick Gaudreau from the high slot at 6:50 of the second period. Gustavsson denied a backhand by Jesper Bratt in the slot at 14:39 of the second, one of his 12 saves in the period.
"I think we have confidence in our team that that we know how to play in these tight games, and we feel comfortable in our system and know how to play it," Boldy said. "We obviously have played in a lot of one-goal games this year, so it's nice to have that experience and kind of be able to just be calm in that moment, rather than stressed out."
The Wild are 19-7-8 in one-goal games this season.
"The bottom line is we've got a lot of guys that can play in the National Hockey League and play at a high level," Evason said. "It's exciting for us to have the depth that we do."
