Hamilton, Hughes score in Devils' road win

DETROIT --Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes were among four New Jersey Devils players with a goal and an assist, helping them defeat the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday.

"This was a great team win," said Hischier, the Devils captain. "We had a lot of guys step up and make plays."

NJD@DET: Hischier deflects Hamilton's wrister for PPG

Dougie Hamilton and Alexander Holtz each had a goal and an assist, and Vitek Vanecek made 32 saves for New Jersey (24-11-3), which was 1-2-1 in its previous four. Vanecek came within 2:00 of his third shutout of the season.
"[Vanecek] has been outstanding all year," said Devils forward Miles Wood, who had two assists. "He's just been so consistent with his game. It's really unfortunate we let up and they got that goal at the end, because I know he really wanted that shutout."
Lucas Raymond scored, and Ville Husso made 22 saves for Detroit (16-13-7), which had won three of four. The Red Wings have fallen behind 4-0, 5-0, 2-0 and 5-0 in their past four games.
"That's just not sustainable," Detroit captain Dylan Larkin said. "I thought we played well enough at 5-on-5 to win the game, but we lost the special-teams battle and we didn't get anything past Vanecek."
Hamilton gave the Devils a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 9:17 of the second period, taking a pass from Hughes and scoring through traffic.

NJD@DET: Hamilton blasts home PPG to kick off scoring

Three minutes later, after Red Wings forward Robby Fabbri fed Oskar Sundqvist alone in the slot, Vanecek made the save on Sundqvist and poked the rebound away from him.
"Tonight was an incredibly frustrating game, because I felt like poor special teams and a great performance by their goalie overshadowed a pretty good 5-on-5 game for us," Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said.
New Jersey made it 2-0 at 16:20 with a second power-play goal. Hamilton shot through traffic again, and Hischier scored with a tip. Hischier, playing on his 24th birthday, extended his goal streak to an NHL career-high four games (four goals).
Husso later stopped Wood with a sliding save but ended up out of position, and Michael McLeod put the rebound into the open net to make it 3-0 at 1:51 of the third period.

NJD@DET: McLeod gets in to extend Devils' lead

Vanecek made a save against Michael Rasmussen on a breakaway at 2:34, then stopped him again on the rebound attempt.
"I didn't think we gave up many high-quality chances, but he made all the saves we needed him to make," Devils coach Lindy Ruff said.
Holtz extended the lead to 4-0 at 6:40, two seconds after a Devils power play expired, and Hughes made it 5-0 at 13:59.
Raymond scored a power-play goal at 18:00 for the 5-1 final.
NOTES: Fabbri played his first game since tearing an ACL on March 10 of last season. He had two shots on goal and three hits, finishing minus-2 in 14:54 of ice time. … Hughes had a game-high 11 shot attempts, including six shots on goal.
