What they still need
Secondary scoring and a captain. The Rangers are going to need more offense from their second- and third-line players, particularly with the departures of Buchnevich and Blackwell. The Rangers haven't had a captain since trading defenseman Ryan McDonagh to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Feb. 26, 2018, and general manager Chris Drury has stressed the importance of having one in place prior to the start of the season. Among the options could be forward Chris Kreider and defenseman Jacob Trouba.
They said it
"I'm not signing here to be a player that I'm not. I'm not a guy who is going to score 30 goals or put up a ton of points. I'm going to be a guy who is going to be hard to play against, who is going to kill penalties, who is going to generate momentum for my team, who is going to stick up for his teammates, who is going to have leadership. I've learned what it takes to win at this level. I know the mindset you need to have to win, so I just look to share that as much as I can, to be a leader." -- forward Barclay Goodrow
Fantasy focus
With three players among the fantasy top 25 overall in defenseman Adam Fox and forwards Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad, and another in the top 50 in goalie Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers could be one of the most valuable fantasy teams this season. Hiring Gallant as coach also could make one of the Rangers' young wings, Kravtsov,
Alexis Lafreniere
or Kaapo Kakko, a big fantasy steal. Two of those forwards likely will play in the top six, and one also could land on the top power play following the trade of Buchnevich. -- Pete Jensen
