Super 16: There's a new No. 1

A new No. 1 has emerged, albeit barely, in NHL.com's Super 16 power rankings for the first time in nine weeks.
The Chicago Blackhawks moved into the top spot this week, edging the Washington Capitals, the No. 1 team for the past eight weeks, by two points. The Blackhawks have won 14 of their past 17 games, including eight of 10 against teams also ranked in this week's Super 16.

The Capitals dropped because of their season-high four-game losing streak, which ended in a 4-2 win against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday. The Wild, who had been in the top three for seven straight weeks, have lost four of five and moved down to No. 5.
The New York Islanders dropped out of the Super 16 despite being in a Stanley Cup Playoff position. The Tampa Bay Lightning are No. 16 even though they're not in a playoff position today. The Lightning are even in points with the Islanders for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Eastern Conference, though New York has the edge with two more regulation/overtime wins.

The rankings are calculated by a points-based system based on the votes of the 13 participating staff members. Point values are assigned to each ranking. The point values are assigned as follows: 16 points for a No. 1 ranking, down to one point for a No. 16 ranking.

1. Chicago Blackhawks (44-20-5)

Hit: The Blackhawks, who play their next two games at Ottawa and Toronto, have won nine of their past 10 games away from United Center. Their 21 road wins are the most among Western Conference teams and second in the NHL behind the New York Rangers (25).
Miss: Center Artem Anisimov will miss 3-4 weeks with a lower-body injury.

2. Washington Capitals (45-17-7)

Total points:196
Last week: No. 1
Hit: The Capitals have scored 25 power-play goals in their past 30 games, going 25 for 90 in that stretch (27.7 percent). They are 30-5-2 this season when scoring a power-play goal.
Miss: They have allowed six power-play goals in the past four games.

3. Pittsburgh Penguins (43-17-9)

Total points: 190
Last week:No. 4
Hit:The Penguins play five of their next seven games at PPG Paints Arena, where they have won three in a row and are 7-1-1 in their past nine. They are 27-4-3 at home.
Miss:Pittsburgh's injury list is a who's who of players who helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup last season: Kris Letang (upper body), Patric Hornqvist (concussion), Matt Cullen (lower body), Olli Maatta (hand), Bryan Rust (upper body), Carl Hagelin (lower body) and Trevor Daley (knee).

4. Columbus Blue Jackets (44-18-6)

Total points:162
Last week:No. 5
Hit: The Blue Jackets have set franchise records for wins and points (94), and defenseman Zach Werenski has set a franchise record for most points in a season by a rookie (40). Rick Nash previously held the record with 39 points in 2002-03.
Miss:The only concern is the Blue Jackets have given the opposition 13 power-play opportunities in the past two games, including eight to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday. They have allowed three power- play goals.

5. Minnesota Wild (43-19-6)

Total points:160
Last week: No. 3
Hit:Center Eric Staal carries a three-game goal-scoring streak (four goals) into his second homecoming game at the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday. Staal played for the Hurricanes from 2003-16, totaling 909 games, 322 goals, 775 points and one Stanley Cup championship (2006). He was traded to the New York Rangers before the 2016 NHL Trade Deadline last season and returned to Carolina to play his former team on March 31.
Miss:The Wild have lost four of their past five games and have allowed four goals in each of their past four.

6. San Jose Sharks (42-20-7)

Hit: The Sharks have points in 21 of their past 25 games (16-4-5). Captain Joe Pavelski has nine points in his past five games.
Miss:Forward Melker Karlsson (lower body) has missed the past two games and defenseman David Schlemko (lower body) has missed six straight.

7. New York Rangers (44-24-2)

Total points:118
Last week:No. 6
Hit: The Rangers have gotten 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) in the past 16 games from their defense, including goals from seven different defensemen. A defensemen has had a point on 16 of New York's past 25 goals.
Miss:They have allowed a power-play goal in four consecutive games.

8. Montreal Canadiens (39-23-8)

Total points:112
Last week:No. 8
Hit: Captain Max Pacioretty has 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in his past 15 games.
Miss:It appears coach Claude Julien is still trying to settle on six defensemen he likes and trusts. Shea Weber, Jeff Petry and Andrei Markov have played every game since Julien took over on Feb. 14. Alexei Emelin and Nathan Beaulieu have recently been scratched. Emelin had a tough game in a 4-2 loss to the Blackhawks on Tuesday; he was minus-3 and left his man open to score two of the first three goals.

9. Calgary Flames (39-27-4)

Hit: Goalie Brian Elliott is 13-1-1 with a 1.93 goals-against average and .934 save percentage since Jan. 26.
Miss: The Flames had their 10-game winning streak ended against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday. Elliott missed the game because of the flu.

10. Ottawa Senators (39-22-7)

Total points:101
Last week:No. 9
Hit: Defenseman Erik Karlsson has 18 points in his past 16 games. He has 62 points, second in the League among defenseman behind San Jose's Brent Burns (70).
Miss: Forward Mark Stone, Ottawa's second leading scorer with 50 points, has missed the past two games and is considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

11. Anaheim Ducks (37-23-10)

Total points:77

Hit:The Ducks have allowed a League-low 75 goals and have a League-best penalty kill (90.0 percent, 109-for-121) since Christmas. Their 12 power-play goals against since Christmas were also the fewest in the NHL during that time.
Miss: Goalie John Gibson, while improving, has missed eight of the past nine games with a lower-body injury. He allowed four goals on 35 shots in his one start since Feb. 22. Gibson is considered day to day.

12. Edmonton Oilers (36-24-9)

Hit: Leon Draisaitl has 58 points. He needs one more to tie Marco Sturm for the NHL single-season record for most points by a German player. Sturm had 59 points (29 goals, 30 assists) in the 2005-06 season. Draisaitl has 23 goals and 35 assists.
Miss: The Oilers are 8-9-1 since the All-Star break despite scoring on 22.5 percent of their power plays (9-for-40). They are 70.2 percent on the penalty kill (26-for-37) in those 18 games.

13. Boston Bruins (38-26-6)

Hit: Left wing Brad Marchand , who scored in a 5-2 win agasinst the Flames on Wednesday, has 19 goals in his past 20 games. He leads the League lead with 36 goals. He is the first Boston player to have back-to-back 30-goal seasons since Glen Murray in 2002-03 and 2003-04.
Miss:This is a stretch because finding something off with the Bruins now is difficult, but their two losses this month were against the only two Eastern Conference teams they have played that would be in the playoffs if the season ended today (Rangers and Senators).

14. Nashville Predators (34-24-11)

Hit:Forward James Neal has goals in back-to-back games after not scoring in 10 in a row. He has 20 this season and is the sixth active player to score 20 goals in each of his first nine seasons, joining Alex Ovechkin, Jaromir Jagr, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Thomas Vanek.
Miss: Goalie Pekka Rinne has allowed four goals in six of his past 11 starts. He has a .878 save percentage since Feb. 11 (37 goals on 304 shots).
15. St. Louis Blues (36-28-5)
Total points: 27
Last week:NR
Hit: Of their 13 remaining games, 10 are against teams that aren't currently in a Stanley Cup Playoff position, including three each against the Colorado Avalanche and Arizona Coyotes, the bottom two teams in the overall NHL standings.
Miss: Center Jori Lehtera has missed the past three games with an upper-body injury.

16. Tampa Bay Lightning (34-26-9)

Hit: The Lightning have won four in a row, are 5-0-1 in their past six games and 12-2-3 in their past 17.
Miss: Centers Tyler Johnson, Cedric Paquette and Vladislav Namestnikov are all out with lower-body injuries.
