Sept. 26: NHL Preseason Roundup

Morgan Geekie scored two third-period goals to help the Seattle Kraken win their debut, 5-3 against the Vancouver Canucks in the preseason opener for each team at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, Washington, on Sunday.

Geekie put the Kraken ahead 4-3 by scoring off his face-off win in the left circle 50 seconds into the period, then made it 5-3 on the power play with a snap shot from the top of the right circle at 14:37.
Jared McCann had a goal and an assist for Seattle, which trailed 2-0 after the first period despite outshooting Vancouver 13-5.
Riley Sheahan scored the first goal in the expansion team's history, cutting it to 2-1 with a backhand in front at 2:32 of the second period.
McCann tied it 2-2 on the power play at 8:36, before Ryan Donato's power-play goal gave Seattle a 3-2 lead at 11:01.
Nils Hoglander tied it 3-3 at 12:30.
Jack Rathbone gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead 10:28 into the first period, and Brock Boeser made it 2-0 on the power play at 11:50.
The Kraken have five more preseason games and will not play in Seattle until their home opener against the Canucks at Climate Pledge Arena on Oct. 23. They open their regular season at the Vegas Golden Knights on Oct. 12.
Sharks 4, Golden Knights 2: Jasper Weatherby had a goal and an assist in his first NHL game, helping the San Jose Sharks defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday.
It was the first preseason game for Vegas. San Jose used a split squad.
The Sharks were 2-for-3 on the power play, including Alexander Chmelevski's goal that gave them a 1-0 lead 15:29 into the first period.
Weatherby extended the lead to 2-0 at 1:02 of the second period with a one-timer from between the circles off a turnover deep in the Vegas defensive zone.
Paul Cotter pulled the Golden Knights within 2-1 at 3:00, but Adam Raska restored the two-goal lead for the Sharks by making it 3-1 at 7:31.
Max Pacioretty cut it to 3-2 on the power play 34 seconds into the third period. Nolan Patrick assisted on the goal in his Vegas debut.
Logan Couture scored a power-play goal at 15:56 for the 4-2 final.
Adin Hill made 21 saves for the Sharks.
Logan Thompson made 24 saves for the Golden Knights.
Vegas forward Mark Stone left the game in the first period after being hit in the face with a puck. There was no update.
Senators 3, Jets 2 (OT): Shane Pinto scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Ottawa Senators a 3-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets in the preseason opener for each team at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg on Sunday.
CJ Suess put the Jets ahead 2-1 at 2:13 of the second period, but Alex Formenton tied the game 2-2 at 12:17 of the third period.
Ridly Greig gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead at 11:30 of the first period.
Pierre-Luc Dubois tied it 1-1 on the power play with 37 seconds left in the first.
Greig received a game misconduct and a major penalty for cross-checking Dubois at 10:31 of the second period.
Anton Forsberg made 17 saves on 19 shots in 30:31 for the Senators, and Filip Gustavsson made the save on all 14 shots he faced in relief to earn the win. Eric Comrie made 24 saves for the Jets.
Oilers 4, Flames 0: Derek Ryan and Xavier Bourgault each had a goal and an assist in a four-goal second period for the Edmonton Oilers in a 4-0 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Sunday.
It was the preseason opener for each team.

, in Edmonton training camp on a professional tryout contract, had two assists, and Ilya Konovalov (seven saves in 29:58) and Stuart Skinner (eight saves in 30:02) combined for the shutout.
The Oilers had 49 shots on goal.
James Hamblin scored at 5:00 of the second to make it 1-0.
Ryan scored a power-play goal off a pass from Bourgault at 6:20 to make it 2-0. Ryan played the past three seasons for the Flames.
Bourgault scored at 14:41 to give the Oilers a 3-0 lead, and Brendan Perlini scored at 17:42 to make it 4-0.
Adam Werner made 24 saves on 26 shots for Calgary, and Dan Vladar made 21 saves on 23 shots in relief.
Forward Tyler Pitlick left the game in the second period with a lower-body injury in his Flames debut.
Ducks 6, Sharks 3: The Anaheim Ducks scored three straight goals in the third period to defeat the San Jose Sharks 6-3 at Honda Center in Anaheim on Sunday.
It was the preseason opener for each team. The Sharks used a split squad.
Kodie Curran put the Ducks ahead 4-3 at 12:03 of the third, Troy Terry scored a power-play goal at 15:32, and Greg Pateryn scored into an empty net at 18:23 after Rudolfs Balcers tied it 3-3 for the Sharks at 6:35.
Curran, Terry and Alexander Volkov each had a goal and an assist, and Sonny Milano had two assists for Anaheim.
Balcers and Nick Bonino each had a goal and an assist for San Jose.
Hampus Lindholm gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead at 5:30 of the first period.
Bonino, in his Sharks debut, tied it 1-1 on the power play at 14:53.
Volkov put Anaheim ahead 2-1 at 1:39 of the second period before Tristen Robins tied it 2-2 at 10:24.
Benoit-Olivier Groulx gave the Ducks a 3-2 lead at 15:36.
Lukas Dostal saved 13 of 14 shots for Anaheim, and Olle Eriksson Ek allowed two goals on 13 shots.
Alexei Melnichuk saved eight of 10 shots for San Jose, and Zach Sawchenko made 14 saves.
Bruins 3, Capitals 2 (SO): Jake DeBrusk and Erik Haula each scored and had a goal in the shootout to help the Boston Bruins defeat the Washington Capitals 3-2 in the preseason opener for each team at Capital One Arena in Washington on Sunday.
Garrett Pilon tied the game 2-2 at 5:26 of the third period for the Capitals.
Joe Snively gave Washington a 1-0 lead 4:15 into the first period before DeBrusk tied it 1-1 at 12:56.
Haula made it 2-1 at 1:09 of the second period.
Jeremy Swayman made 18 saves on 19 shots playing 30:11 for the Bruins. Troy Grosenick made 11 saves on 12 shots in relief.
Pheonix Copley made 12 saves on 14 shots through the second period for the Capitals. Vitek Vanecek made the save on all nine shots he faced in the third period.
Daniel Sprong scored Washington's only goal in the shootout, and Hendrix Lapierre had two assists for the Capitals.
Islanders 4, Rangers 0: Cal Clutterbuck had a goal and two assists, and the New York Islanders defeated the New York Rangers 4-0 at Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday.
It was the first preseason game for each team.
Casey Cizikas and Ross Johnston each had a goal and an assist, and Alex Jefferies had two assists for the Islanders.
Brock Nelson made it 1-0 at 11:28 of the first period, and Cizikas extended the lead to 2-0 on a 4-on-3 power play at 17:08. Rangers forward Barclay Goodrow was serving a five-minute major after being called for boarding Islanders forward Kyle MacLean at 13:49. Goodrow also received a game misconduct on the play.
Clutterbuck made it 3-0 at 12:44 of the second period, then fed Johnston for a one-timer in front at 4:50 of the third period for the 4-0 final.
Ilya Sorokin made 13 saves playing 32:44 for the Islanders, and Jakub Skarek made 15 saves.
Alexandar Georgiev saved 12 of 15 shots playing 32:44 for the Rangers, and Adam Huska made seven saves.
Panthers 3, Predators 1: Brandon Montour had a goal and two assists, helping the Florida Panthers defeat the Nashville Predators 3-1 in the second of two split-squad games at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida, on Sunday.
Aleksander Barkov had three assists, and Carter Verhaeghe had a goal and an assist for Florida.
Anthony Duclair (2:36) and Verhaeghe (7:25) each scored a power-play goal in the second period, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Egor Afanasyev cut it to 2-1 with 2:03 left in the second.
Montour made it 3-1 at 10:22 of the third period.
Spencer Knight made 29 saves for Florida. David Rittich made 27 saves in his Nashville debut.
Panthers 5, Predators 4 (OT): Sam Bennett scored 46 seconds into overtime to give the Florida Panthers a 5-4 win against the Nashville Predators in the first of two split-squad preseason games at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida, on Sunday.
It was the first preseason game for each team.
Panthers forward Frank Vatrano had a hat trick, and Predators forward Tanner Jeannot scored twice. The teams combined for five goals in the third period, including Jeannot's second that tied it 4-4 at 17:06.
Florida rallied from down 2-0 when Vatrano scored his second goal 56 seconds into third. It led 3-2 after Aleksi Heponiemi scored at 12:02 before Rem Pitlick tied it 3-3 with a power-play goal at 13:21. Vatrano completed his hat trick to put the Panthers ahead 4-3 at 14:02.
Yakov Trenin scored in the second period for Nashville.
Sam Montembeault saved 17 of 19 shots for the Panthers, and Evan Fitzpatrick made nine saves.
Devin Cooley allowed four goals on 15 shots for the Predators, and Connor Ingram made 20 saves.
Florida defenseman Aaron Ekblad played 24:19 and had three shots in his first game since breaking his leg March 28 in a game against the Dallas Stars.
