PHI@NJD: Sharangovich tucks the puck over goal line

NEWARK, N.J. -- Yegor Sharangovich scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, and the New Jersey Devils won for the first time in 11 games, 6-4 against the Philadelphia Flyers at Prudential Center on Tuesday.

The rookie forward scored on a backhand at the left post to give the Devils a 5-4 lead at 12:36, 11 seconds after Travis Sanheim deflected a Sean Couturier shot to tie it 4-4 for the Flyers at 12:25.
Pavel Zacha and Connor Carrick each had a goal and an assist, and Jack Hughes, Michael McLeod and Ty Smith each had two assists for the Devils (15-27-7), who had not won since April 8 (1-9-1). Mackenzie Blackwood made 26 saves for his first win in 11 games (1-7-3).
"It feels much better to come in the locker room and celebrate a win, and we got to learn from that," New Jersey captain Nico Hischier said. "The game wasn't easy, but we found a way to bounce back every time. In the end, all the matters is we broke that streak and finally got a win."
The Flyers (22-20-7) rallied from down 3-0 to tie the game on three straight goals by Oskar Lindblom, Philippe Myers and Claude Giroux, but they lost for the fourth time in six games (2-3-1). Brian Elliott made 21 saves.
"Our guys have never quit, and they didn't quit tonight," Philadelphia coach Alain Vigneault said. "We were down by three and battled back hard in the third. We keep pushing and we keep trying, and that's what you want from your players."

The Flyers are sixth in the eight-team MassMutual East Division, 11 points behind the fourth-place Boston Bruins. The top four teams will qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
It was the second of four consecutive games between the teams; the Flyers won 4-3 in a shootout here Sunday. They are scheduled to play again here Thursday and at Philadelphia on Saturday.
Hischier scored a power-play goal to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead at 18:45 of the first period.
Zacha made it 2-0 on a power-play goal from the high slot at 2:20 of the second period.
The Devils were 2-for-2 on the power play and on the penalty kill. They limited the Flyers to one shot on goal during a four-minute power play after McLeod was given a double minor for high-sticking Couturier at 5:11 of the first.
"If we dig in on our special teams, that can help us win games," Hischier said. "Those four minutes … we did an excellent job, we did exactly what we wanted. We were really detailed, didn't give them much, and that brings the momentum back to us."

Miles Wood gave New Jersey a 3-0 lead with an unassisted goal at 5:14 of the second.
Lindblom scored 15 seconds later on a rebound at the right post to pull Philadelphia within 3-1 at 5:29.
Myers scored unassisted to make it 3-2 at 2:24 of the third period, and Giroux tied it 3-3 at 3:34 when he scored on a wrist shot.
Carrick scored his first goal of the season in his sixth game to give the Devils a 4-3 lead at 8:04.
"We all know that if you're going to be a defenseman, you have to defend first, and [Carrick's] defended well," New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff said. "To get involved in the offense and score that goal ... it's like a huge bonus."
Blackwood made a save against Giroux alone in the slot with 19 seconds remaining and Elliott pulled for an extra attacker.
"We need to be better," Couturier said. "We need to be more ready from the start of the game and be tougher to play for a whole game. We can be on and off. When we're on, we're one of the best teams, but we got to be more consistent."
Mikhail Maltsev scored an empty-net goal with two seconds left for the 6-4 final.
New Jersey rookies Maltsev, Sharangovich, Smith and Janne Kuokkanen combined for five points (two goals, three assists).
"The trait I like about our rookies is their will to never quit; it's been there the whole year," Ruff said. "I like the desire to make a difference inside the game. There's been some ups and downs, but that desire to make a difference, to be a player they believe can help this team win on a regular basis."
NOTES: Flyers defenseman Egor Zamula was plus-1 with three shots on goal and one blocked shot in 19:19 in his NHL debut. ... Smith, a defenseman, had two blocked shots in 15:50 in his return to the lineup after missing four games with an upper-body injury.
