SJS@MTL: Dahlen deflects Burns' shot for first goal

MONTREAL -- The San Jose Sharks extended the Montreal Canadiens' season-opening losing streak to four games with a 5-0 win at Bell Centre on Tuesday.

Adin Hill made 21 saves for his fourth NHL shutout and Jonathan Dahlen scored his first two NHL goals in the first 3:36 for San Jose (2-0-0), which won its sixth straight in Montreal since Dec. 15, 2015.
"We've played two excellent hockey games," Hill said. "Both games, we've outshot the other team, outchanced them and outplayed them. We deserved two out of two wins, and we do, so hopefully we can keep it rolling against Ottawa (Senators on Thursday)."

SJS@MTL: Hill stuffs Anderson's breakaway opportunity

Hill, acquired from the Arizona Coyotes in a July 17 trade, made 20 saves in a 4-3 season-opening win against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday.
"He's come up with some big saves," Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. "And what I love about it, he's into the game, on the bench and TV timeouts, he's worried about getting everybody else going. He's a leader in his own right."
Jake Allen made 20 saves for Montreal (0-4-0), which has scored three goals during its longest losing streak to begin a season since losing its first five games in 1995-96.
"I think every guy in here knows that this is not good enough," Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry said. "So if it comes down to [having a players-only meeting] and we have to do that, we shouldn't be in that situation four games into the year."
Timo Meier and Erik Karlsson each had a goal and two assists, and Logan Couture had two assists.
Dahlen gave San Jose a 1-0 lead at 1:22 of the first period. He and Meier each redirected Brent Burns' wrist shot from the right point past Allen on the Sharks' first shot on goal.
Dahlen, the son of former Sharks forward Ulf Dahlen, made it 2-0 at 3:36 when he scored on a rebound of Couture's shot.
"I actually gave him a call after the game," Dahlen said. "I've been calling him after every game almost since I was, I don't know, 10? So I gave him a call after this one too and it was pretty fun. He was just happy. He thought I played well, and so did I."

SJS@MTL: Dahlen buries rebound for second NHL goal

Karlsson scored San Jose's third goal of the period at 19:22.
"We beat ourselves in the first period," Canadiens coach Dominique Ducharme said. "We lost races coming back into our zone, we blew coverage, we gave them too many chances and they took advantage of them."
Meier made it 4-0 at 3:09 when he scored a power-play goal with a wrist shot from the left side on a pass from Couture.
Kevin Labanc scored San Jose's second power-play goal on a one-timer from the left side at 14:31 for the 5-0 final.
Montreal went 0-for-2 on the power play and has not scored on 13 man-advantage opportunities this season.
"I think we need to get back to the basics," Petry said. "I think we need to put in the effort and make sure that we're supporting each other. There are so many times where we're skating away from the puck, we're leaving guys out to dry, and we're not playing as a unit of five. And we're going to go nowhere playing like that."
NOTES: Burns played his 599th consecutive game. … Forwards Mike Hoffman and Adam Brooks each made his Canadiens debut. Hoffman, who missed training camp and the first three games because of a lower-body injury, had three shots on goal in 16:36. Brooks, who was claimed off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 11, played 12:32. … The Canadiens' longest losing streak to start a season is a seven-game skid at the beginning of the 1938-39 season.
