Voynov, who played four seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, was suspended indefinitely by the NHL after his arrest on felony domestic violence charges Oct. 20, 2014. He entered a no-contest plea to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge and served a 90-day sentence. He returned to Russia in September 2015.
On May 27, he was one of the final players added to the Team Russia roster. Three days later, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Voynov could not play in the World Cup because of his NHL suspension.
"There has been no change in his status," Commissioner Bettman said. "He's been suspended from the League and the Russian Federation was told that he was not eligible to play in the World Cup. What happens from that moving forward in terms of what somebody may try to do is a different story, but his status has not changed."
The Russian Federation announced that Nikita Nesterov of the Tampa Bay Lightning will replace Voynov on the roster.
He will join Team Russia defensemen Alexei Emelin and Andrei Markov of the Montreal Canadiens, Dmitry Kulikov of the Buffalo Sabres, Alexey Marchenko of the Detroit Red Wings, Dmitry Orlov of the Washington Capitals and Nikita Zaitsev of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Team Russia will open training camp for the World Cup on Sept. 4 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The team, which will be led by Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin and Calder Trophy winner Artemi Panarin of the Chicago Blackhawks, plays its first pretournament game against Team Czech Republic at VTB Arena in Moscow on Sept. 8.
The World Cup runs Sept. 17 to Oct. 1, with all games played at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Games will be televised on ESPN in the United States and Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada.
Team Russia will be in Group B at the World Cup, with Team Finland, Team North America and Team Sweden. Its first game will be Sept. 18 against Team Sweden.
