TOR@OTT: Holl scores game-winner in OT

OTTAWA-- Justin Holl scored with 18 seconds left in overtime to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-2 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday.

Holl took a cross-ice pass from Mitchell Marner and scored with a wrist shot after Auston Matthews started the play.
"I don't remember what exactly what occurred, but I do remember the kick save and taking it hard to the net, and he was able to make a hard play to the net and get the goalie a little bit out of position, I think," Holl said. "Then 'Mitchy' found it and found me perfectly in the slot and I was able to bury it, which was nice."
Matthews broke up a pass in the neutral zone by Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot, leading to the game-winning goal.
"I was thinking of moving it early and joining the rush (a developing 3-on-1)," Chabot said. "Obviously, to redo it and be in that situation again, I'd probably just skate it. But it happens in fractions of seconds. Obviously, I take blame for it."
Ilya Mikheyev and Jason Spezza scored, and Jack Campbell made 29 saves for the Maple Leafs (21-10-2), who won a second straight after winning one of their previous seven.
Alex Formenton and Connor Brown scored for the Senators (12-20-4), who are 3-0-3 in their past six games. Anton Forsberg made 38 saves in his Ottawa debut, his first NHL game since March 7, 2020.
"He was unbelievable," Senators coach D.J. Smith said of Forsberg. "I would've liked to have gotten him a win here tonight. He gave us every opportunity to win this game. ... The goals that go in, I don't know if he ever could've stopped them."
A pass attempt by Campbell deflected off Senators forward Chris Tierney's stick and right to Brown, who scored shorthanded into an open net at 18:53 of the first period, giving the Senators a 1-0 lead.
It was Campbell's first goal allowed in 152:20.

TJ Brodie's redirection hit the crossbar and then bounced in off Mikheyev's shoulder to tie it 1-1 at 14:40 of the second period.
Spezza's slap shot from the top of the slot deflected off Senators defenseman Nikita Zaitsev to make it 2-1 at 10:41 of the third period.
It was his first goal at Ottawa in two seasons with Toronto (nine games) after playing 11 seasons for the Senators from 2002-14.
"Obviously, good memories for me coming back here, but it's been a while since I've played here," he said. "I don't know if it's the same to get fired up here. There's not many guys here or there's nobody here that I played with. But obviously [good feelings] just driving around the city, coming in with the bus and seeing all the landmarks, it brings back good memories of playing here. A special city for me. This place holds a special place in my heart, but just worried about winning games at this point."

A turnover by Campbell led to another goal when he misplayed the puck in front of his crease and Formenton scored five-hole to tie it 2-2 at 13:14.
"I feel bad about those two goals," Campbell said. "I don't want to kill the momentum, and we played so well. I know those types of goals just can't go in."
It was Formenton's second NHL goal, first since Oct. 30, 2018, in his 12 games.
"When I came up here I wanted to be hard on the forecheck, using my speed, and also contributing offensively," said Formenton, who was recalled from Belleville of the American Hockey League on Wednesday. "My main focus right now is my defensive game and making sure pucks are getting out, as a winger."
Forsberg was claimed off waivers by the Senators on March 17. He is the fifth goalie to start for Ottawa this season, the fourth since March 10 (Matt Murray, Joey Daccord, Filip Gustavsson, Marcus Hogberg).
NOTES: Campbell shut out the Calgary Flames 2-0 on March 20 and the Edmonton Oilers 4-0 on Feb. 27 in his prior two starts. ... Spezza scored once at Ottawa in five seasons with the Dallas Stars (March 6, 2016). ... Marner and Matthews have combined to score 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) in seven games against the Senators this season. ... This was Forsberg's fourth NHL game since March 26, 2018. He signed with the Oilers this offseason, was waived Jan. 11 and claimed by the Carolina Hurricanes the next day, was waived two days later and claimed by the Winnipeg Jets the next day, and was waived March 16 and claimed by Ottawa.
