Week 20: Fantasy top 25 goalie rankings for 2016-17

All season long, NHL.com will rank the top 25 goalies for standard Yahoo leagues (wins, goals-against average, save percentage, shutouts). Players with long-term injuries have been removed from this list.
These rankings are based on expectations for the rest of the season. Value is quantified by projected starts, peripheral category coverage, time-share situations, team defenses, past performance and overall upside in standard leagues. It is important to note that our rankings reflect sheer fantasy value, not necessarily the most talented goalies in order.

The 2017 NHL Trade Deadline had more of an impact on goalies who didn't get traded than those who did.
No NHL goalies were involved in trades Wednesday; Ben Bishop was traded to the Los Angeles Kings and Peter Budaj to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday. There were a handful of other goalies who were thought to be changing teams but remained in place (Ryan Miller, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jaroslav Halak). Even with the lack of movement, there has been an impact on fantasy owners for better or worse.

Here are some fantasy goalie developments involving players who were traded, teammates involved and those who stayed put.

• Andrei Vasilevskiy (60 percent owned) saw his ownership jump 22 percent in the past day. With Bishop gone, he should get majority of the starts. The Lightning had been grooming him to become their goalie of the future and it may finally be his time. Vasilevskiy is 13-13-5 with a 2.75 goals-against average, .911 save percentage and two shutouts, and has great value for those in keeper leagues. He allowed three goals on 31 shots in a 4-3 overtime win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday and now has the veteran Budaj behind him, who won't pose as much of a threat as Bishop did.
  - The Kings' goalie tandem of Jonathan Quick and Bishop should receive a collective boost. Quick, who returned Saturday after not playing since an injury in the Kings' first game of the season in October, made 32 saves in a 4-1 win against the Anaheim Ducks. However, Quick allowed five goals on 35 shots in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild on Monday. The addition of Bishop means Quick won't have to be a workhorse down the stretch and could split starts. Bishop, who was 16-12-3 with a 2.55 GAA and .911 SV% in Tampa Bay this season, made his Kings debut Tuesday. He made 28 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames and should continue to provide great value when he starts.

• Fleury likely would have had an opportunity to be a No. 1 goalie had he been traded. However, he wasn't and that's not good news for owners, who were hoping to see him get more playing time. Fleury (68 percent owned) allowed three goals on 28 shots in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday and is firmly entrenched behind Pittsburgh Penguins starter Matt Murray. Fleury is 15-8-5 with a 3.15 GAA, .905 SV% and no shutouts. Murray has picked up where he left off in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season (23-8-3, 2.29 GAA, .926 SV%)
  - Budaj was having a Vezina Trophy-like season with the Kings after taking over for the injured Quick. He was 27-20-3 with a 2.12 GAA and .917 SV%, and tied for the League lead with seven shutouts in 53 games (51 starts). Anyone who picked him up after Jeff Zatkoff faltered with the Kings was rewarded. However, Budaj likely loses value in Tampa Bay because he's at best in a 50-50 timeshare, but likely will secede starts to Vasilevskiy. Budaj is owned in 56 percent of leagues, down 20 percent in the past day.
  - The New York Islanders thought they'd find a taker for Halak (22 percent owned), who has impressed in Bridgeport of the American Hockey League by going 14-2-1 with a 1.91 GAA, .933 SV% and two shutouts in 18 games. Halak began the season with New York but struggled and was sent to the AHL. His NHL salary-cap charge ($4.5 million this season and next season) likely was a turn off to potential buyers. Halak remains in the minors, not worth owning at all, unless Islanders starter Thomas Greiss (72 percent owned) gets injured.
