Matthias, 29, had 12 points (eight goals, four assists) in 45 games this season. He last played in a 5-4 overtime loss at the Nashville Predators on Monday. The Jets entered Saturday 10 points behind the St. Louis Blues for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.
"He is playing with two young guys, with [Joel] Armia and [Adam] Lowry, and I think he helped them in a lot of ways, trying to define that game, that offensive-zone pressure game, the physical game," Maurice said. "Andrew Copp will come in and try to replicate that in Shawn's absence."
Matthias, a second-round pick by the Detroit Red Wings (No. 47) in the 2006 NHL Draft, has 97 points (48 goals, 49 assists) in 312 NHL games through 10 seasons with the Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche and Jets.
