5-Takes-Retro-16x9

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Clawing their way back from three separate deficits, the Florida Panthers earned a point with a 5-4 shootout loss to the Calgary Flames at FLA Live Arena on Saturday.
With the loss, the Panthers now sit at 9-7-2.
"We always have good moments in the game and bad moments," Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov said when asked the back-and-forth contest. "We keep learning. It's a long season. We've just got to keep our heads up and keep learning from those moments. It was a good point today. Of course we wanted two, but we didn't get it today. We have a new chance tomorrow."

1. COLIN HIS SHOT

White showed some great hustle on this goal.
With Jacob Markstrom precariously going behind his net to play the puck, White chased down the exposed goaltender, quickly stripped away the rubber and buried a wrap-around goal to get the Panthers on the board and trim the deficit down to 2-1 just 3:30 into the second period.

"He's a really smart player," Barkov said of White, who he is currently centering on the top line. "He knows where to pick those pucks up and has a really good stick. Takeaways and stuff like that in the offensive zone, he makes those little plays. He's a hockey player."
A steady presence in the lineup, White has been solid in the early goings of his first season in South Florida. Through 17 games, the offseason acquisition has notched 10 points (four goal, six assists), 25 shots on goal and a +5 rating while averaging 12:10 of ice time per contest.

2. PASSING ME BY

You don't find passing much prettier than this.
Tying up the game on the power play in the second period, Sam Reinart finished off an outstanding tic-tac-toe sequence with Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk by firing a quick shot past Markstrom from the low sot to make it 2-2 at 10:56.

"I think we're making the simple play and not trying to force anything," Reinhart said. "We've got an extra guy out there, so there's going to be plays to be made. We're executing a bit better."
Catching fire, Reinhart has now scored a goal in each of his last three games and found the back of the net five times over his last six games overall. Leading the team with a 62.50 CF% at 5-on-5 last night, the Panthers led 15-9 in shot attempts when Reinhart was deployed against Calgary.
Over the last 11 games, the Panthers have scored 11 goals on the power play.
"We're 10, 11 games in where our power play's been good," Panthers head coach Paul Maurice said. "It's generated goals and it's generated chances."

3. LUOSTY LIGHTS THE LAMP

If you haven't been paying attention, now's a good time to talk about Eetu Luostarinen.
Getting off the best start of his young career, the feisty Finn tied the game for the Cats when he crashed he net and tapped the puck past Markstrom to make it 3-3 at 1:12 of the third period.

After scoring a career-high nine goals in 2021-22, he's already potted six this season.
"Always on pucks," according to Maurice, Luostarinen has found great success wherever he's lined up this season. At 5-on-5, the Panthers have led 196-145 in shot attempts, 110-63 in scoring chances and 15-5 in goals when he's been on the ice, per NaturalStatTrick.com.
In 18 games this season, Luostarinen has posted a xGF below 50% in just two games.

4. TKA-CLUTCH

Tkachuk made sure the Panthers would earn at least a point.
Coming up in the clutch against his former team, Tkachuk, who was acquired from the Flames for a package that included Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar this past summer, made it 4-4 and got the game to overtime when he re-directed a shot past Markstrom at 13:46 of the third period.

"It felt like we were dominating and down 4-3 somehow," Tkachuk said. "They came out and they played solid at the start and didn't give us much, but then we took over at the start of the second period. It seemed like they were hanging on a little bit in the third. … It was back and forth in the third, probably a little bit more than we would've liked."
Getting off to an outstanding start during his first season in South Florida, Tkachuk leads the team and ranks ninth in the NHL with 24 points (seven goals, 17 assists). Recording multiple points in each of his last three games, he's racked up two goals and five assists in that span.
Mr. Consistent, Tkachuk has cracked the scoresheet in 13 of 16 games.

5. ROCKING THE RETROS

The Panthers picked up a point, and they looked good doing it.
Setting social media ablaze, the new Reverse Retro jerseys made their debut against Calgary.
Inspired by their 1998 uniform, the jerseys feature a light blue colorway with a center crest showcasing the iconic sun, palm tree and stick logo. Spicing things up, the sun and palm crest incorporates an eye-popping dimensional treatment with raised rays radiating from the sun.
