1/15/22 Post Game Interviews

SUNRISE, Fla. - This is getting out of hand!
After filling up the opposing net in a 7-1 win over the Stars on Friday, the Panthers wrapped up their back-to-back set with a wild 9-2 win over the Blue Jackets on Saturday at FLA Live Arena.
Per Sportsnet Stats, the Panthers, who extended their point streak to nine games, are the first team to win by 6-plus goals on back to-back nights since the Red Wings on March 26-27, 2000.

"They didn't stop the whole game," Panthers interim head coach Andrew Brunette said of his team's effort. "The energy from the guys was phenomenal and it was fun to be a part of it."
Improving to 26-7-5, Florida has scored at least five goals in six of its last seven contests.
"The joy that they're playing with right now is contagious," Brunette said.
Pouncing on the Blue Jackets right after the puck dropped, Carter Verhaeghe put the Panthers up 1-0 when he sent a quick shot past Elvis Merzlikins, who was down on the ice after venturing out of his crease, and into the empty cage to break the ice just 46 seconds into the first period.
With the Panthers on the power play after Ryan Lomberg drew a penalty less than two minutes later, Anthony Duclair doubled the lead to 2-0 when he took a pass from Jonathan Huberdeau and blasted in a one-timer from the high slot for his team-best 16th goal of the season at 2:07.
Sent zooming up the ice after receiving an excellent stretch pass on the penalty kill, MacKenzie Weegar then pocketed the 100th point of his NHL career when he whipped a pinpoint wrist shot from the right circle into the cage for a shorthanded goal to extend Florida's lead to 3-0 at 9:27.
Making sure that Merzlikins would not even make it to the first intermission, Verhaeghe chased the Blue Jackets netminder from the game when he faced down a defender and wired home an absolute laser of a wrist shot from near the top of the left circle to make it a 4-0 game at 13:28.
Following that goal, Joonas Korpisalo took over in net for Columbus.
"I think confidence is a big thing in the NHL, and I can tell you firsthand that every guy in that room has a lot of confidence," Weegar said. "All four lines, all six D, Bob and Knighter, we all have a lot of confidence right now. Even the coaching staff has a lot of confidence back there. They've done a great job getting us ready and making adjustments throughout the game."
In the second period, the scoring spree continued when Jonathan Huberdeau cashed in on a rebound after Sam Bennett was robbed on the doorstep to make it 5-0 at 2:02. Later in the period, Anton Lundell got in on the action when he buried a shot from the slot to push the lead to 6-0.
On the power play early in the third period, the Blue Jackets spoiled a shutout bid for Sergei Bobrovsky, who finished with 28 saves to improve to 19-3-3, when Gustav Nyquist tucked in a rebound at 2:11. But a little over a minute later, Bennett kicked off another scoring surge for the Panthers when he received a pass from Duclair before beating Korpisalo to make it 7-1 at 3:40.
Continuing to pile it on, Lundell set off the goal horn again when he swept in a shot to make it 8-1 at 7:33. Soon after, Lomberg, who was flying up and down the ice all night, was rewarded with a goal when his centering feed deflected off a defender and into the net to make it 9-1 at 10:14.
"We played as a team," Lundell said. "It was a good job from the first shift to the last shift."
At 10:50, Boone Jenner scored to cut the deficit for the Blue Jackets down to 9-2, but from then on out the Cats continued to control the game until the final buzzer sent rats flying onto the ice.
Owning the best points percentage in the NHL (.750), Florida, which has won 21 of its first 24 games at home, will now hit the road for a five-game road trip beginning on Tuesday at Calgary.
"We feel great," Weegar said. "I think we've just kind of established that dominance at home, and we're just having fun with it every single day. When we come to the rink, everybody's just having fun. We've realized how good we are and how fast we can skate. It's a great feeling."
Here are five takeaways from Saturday's win in Sunrise…

1. TWO FOR CARTER

Swaggy is full of, well, swagger right now.
Bookending a four-goal outburst in the first period for the Panthers, Verhaeghe first made it 1-0 when he opened the scoring just 46 seconds into tonight's game, and then later sent Merzlikins packing when he took a feed from Weegar and wired home a wrist shot to make it 4-0 at 13:28.

Tied for third on the Panthers in scoring with 31 points (13 goals, 18 assists), Verhaeghe has scored five goals over his last four games. Per NaturalStatTrick.com, when he was on the ice against the Blue Jackets at 5-on-5, the Cats owned a large 13-4 advantage in scoring chances.
Looking at his 13 goals this season, all of them have been scored at even strength.

2. DUKE IS CROWNED

Duke won't be stopped.
Taking over sole possession of the team's goal-scoring lead, Duclair tallied his 16th goal of the season in the first period when he connected on a one-timer on the power play to make it 2-0.
Over his last four games, the speedy scorer has netted three goals.

Finishing with a goal and an assist against the Blue Jackets, Duclair has now produced multi-point performances in three of his last four games while racking up three goals and four assists.
Looking at his 16 goals this season, 13 have been scored on home ice.

3. ONE HUNDRED FOR WEEGS

Weegar recorded a pair of milestones on one shot tonight.
Bolting down the ice on the penalty kill after taking a pass from Sam Reinhart, the Panthers defenseman registered the 100th point of his NHL career when he fired a shot past Merzlikins from the right circle for the first shorthanded goal of his career to make it 3-0 in the first period.

"When I was playing in the East Coast League, I don't think I would've thought that I'd ever get 100 points in the NHL," said Weegar, a former seventh-round draft pick. "It's a great milestone. Like I said in between periods, I'm really happy that we got the two points to go along with it."
Matching a career-high, Weegar registered four points (one goal, three assists) against the Blue Jackets. Making history, he joined Bryan McCabe (Oct. 16, 2010, March 3, 2010, and March 1, 2009) as the only two defensemen in franchise history to accumulate multiple four-point games.
Suiting up in all 38 games this season, Weegar has notched 25 points (three goals, 22 assists).

4. TWO FOR LUNDY

Just 34 games into his NHL career and Lundell already has two multi-goal games.
Finding the back of the net twice against the Blue Jackets, the 20-year-old rookie put the Panthers up 6-0 when he took a pass from Lomberg and scored from the slot in the second period, and then scored again from the doorstep in the third period to make it an 8-1 game.

"A special game again," Lundell said. "Right from the first period we were ready to play."
On a tear as of late, Lundell has earned at least one point in eight of his last nine games, posting four goals and seven assists in that stretch. Thanks to that hot streak, he now, at the time of this writing, ranks tied for fourth among NHL rookies in both points (23) and goals (9).

5. BOB GOES BACK-TO-BACK

Sure the Panthers are scoring a ton right now, but we can't forget about Bob.
After turning aside 29 of 30 shots against the Stars on Friday, the two-time Vezina Trophy was back in action less than 24 hours later against the Blue Jackets. Standing tall against his former team, he made 28 saves, including stopping all 17 shots that he saw during the first two periods.
Starting eight of the last nine games for the Cats, Bobrovsky, who currently ranks tied for third in the league in wins (19), has registered a 7-0-1 record with a .929 save percentage in that span.
"He's been great," Brunette said. "I was hoping we'd shut the door for him in the third period against his former team, but he's been outstanding. In these games a lot of time it's hard to stay focused and stay in the moment, but he did a great job both nights and made huge saves."
Of his 28 saves against Columbus, seven were made on shots from high-danger areas.
"The guys have been rolling," said Bobrovsky, who was won 15 of his first 16 starts on home ice this season. "It's fun to watch and to be a part of this incredible atmosphere on our home ice."

BONUS: TOO MUCH TO HANDLE

This was one of those nights where five takes just isn't enough.
With that in mind, here's some more quick hitters from tonight's win.
- With a goal and an assist against the Blue Jackets, Huberdeau extended his point streak to eight games. In that span, he's notched five goals and 15 assists. At the time of this writing, he's currently locked in a four-way tie for first place on the NHL's scoring leaderboard with 53 points.

  • In addition to posting a goal and an assist, Lomberg had four hits and drew two penalties.
    - Aaron Ekblad dished out three assists for his fifth three-point game of the season.
    - Sam Bennett has scored six goals over his last four games.
    - The Panthers are the third team in the past 10 years to score nine or more goals in a game at least twice in a single season.
    - Florida's 16 goals over the last two games are tied for the second-most goals scored by an NHL team over the course of a single back-to-back set in the last 25 years.
