Smith, 24, skated in two games with Detroit this season, and 19 games with Detroit's AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL), recording five points (2-3-5).
The 6-foot-2, 214-pound native of Toronto, Ontario, has played in 85 NHL games over four seasons (2019-2020 to 2022-23) with Detroit, amassing 14 points (7-7-14). He led all Red Wings skaters with 108 penalty minutes over 46 games in 2021-22 and produced a career-high seven points (4-3-7).
Smith has spent five seasons (2016-2017 to 2020-21, 2022-2023) with Grand Rapids, registering 52 points (26-26-52) over 148 AHL games. In 2018-2019, he helped the Griffins reach the AHL playoffs, recording two points in four games (0-2-2).
Prior to his professional career, Smith skated in four Ontario Hockey League (OHL) seasons (2014-15 to 2017-18) between the Barrie Colts, Guelph Storm and Kitchener Rangers, logging 135 points (73-62-135) over 236 games. He led the OHL in penalty minutes in two consecutive seasons (146 in 2015-16 and 139 in 2016-17).
Smith was originally selected by Detroit in the second round (46th overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft. His brother, Gemel, currently plays for the Syracuse Crunch (AHL) and is a veteran of 91 NHL games between the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning and Detroit.
