SUNRISE, Fla. - Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito announced today that the club has agreed to terms with forward Eric Staal on a one-year contract.
"Eric is an experienced leader in this League and a tremendous competitor," said Zito. "His professionalism and veteran mindset will add value to our locker room on and off the ice."

Staal, 37, has recorded 1,034 points (441-593-1,034) in 1,293 games between the Carolina Hurricanes (2003-04 to 2015-16), New York Rangers (2015-16), Minnesota Wild (2016-17 to 2019-20), Buffalo Sabres (2020-21), and the Montreal Canadiens (2020-21). The 17-season NHL veteran currently leads all active skaters in regular season games played and ranks fifth in goals scored.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound native of Thunder Bay, Ontario is the Hurricanes' Stanley Cup Playoff leader in goals (19) and power-play goals (10), ranking second in regular-season goals (322), assists (453), and points (775). He served as the captain of the Hurricanes from 2009-10 to 2015-16. During the Hurricanes' Stanley Cup run in 2005-06, Staal led all playoff skaters in assists (19) and points (28), including leading all skaters in the Stanley Cup Final with six assists and eight points (2-6-8).
Over his NHL career, Staal has played in six All-Star Games (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2018, 2020) and was selected as the All-Star Game MVP in 2008.
On the international stage, Staal is one of five active members of the Triple Gold Club still playing in the NHL, winning gold medals with Canada at the 2007 IIHF World Championship and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006. He also helped Canada capture a silver medal at the 2008 IIHF World Championship and served as captain at the 2013 tournament as well as the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
Prior to his professional career, Staal skated in 185 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) games with the Peterborough Petes from 2000-01 to 2002-03, registering 209 points (81-128-209). During the 2002-03 season, he was named to the CHL First All-Star Team.
Originally selected by the Carolina Hurricanes with the second overall pick of the 2003 NHL Draft, Staal is the brother of current Panthers defenseman Marc Staal, Charlotte Checkers Assistant Coach Jared Staal and Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal.
