Niemi, 34, is a veteran of 426 NHL games with Pittsburgh (2017-18), the Dallas Stars (2015-16 to 2016-17), San Jose Sharks (2010-11 to 2014-15) and Chicago Blackhawks (2008-09 to 2009-10), owning a career record of 227-128-51, with a 2.52 goals against average, .912 save percentage and 35 shutouts. As the starting goalie for the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks, he posted a 16-6 record and two shutouts during their playoff run.
Undrafted, Chicago signed Niemi on May 5, 2008. During the 2012-13 season, Niemi finished tied for first in the NHL with 24 wins in 43 games played with San Jose.
On the international stage, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound native of Vantaa, Finland, won a bronze medal with Team Finland at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games alongside Panthers forward Aleksander Barkov.
In three games with Pittsburgh, he has posted a 0-3-0 record, with a 7.50 goals against average and a .797 save percentage.
