luongo masterton

SUNRISE, Fla. - The South Florida chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association (PHWA) announced today that Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo has been selected as the club's 2018 nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

Luongo, 39, has missed 33 games this season due to injury, while posting a 15-10-2 record, a 2.55 goals against average, .927 save percentage and three shutouts. He has played 29 games and is on pace for the second-fewest amount of games played in a full NHL season (excluding 2012-13) in his 19-year career.
Since returning to the Panthers lineup on Feb. 17 at Calgary, the 6-foot-3, 217-pound native of Montreal, Quebec owns a 9-4-1 record, 2.48 goals against average, .926 save percentage and two shutouts, accumulating a total of 19 points for Florida in their race for a Wild Card position in the Stanley Cup Playoff race.
At BB&T Center since Feb. 22 vs. Washington, Luongo owns a 7-2-0 record, 2.53 goals against average, .928 save percentage and one shutout. In the span from Feb. 22 to March 10, Luongo earned seven consecutive victories.
Luongo entered the 2017-18 season after missing Florida's final 18 games of the previous campaign due to injury. He stands third all-time in games played (995), fourth in wins (468) and tied for ninth in shutouts (76). With his 200th win with the Panthers on Nov. 27, 2017 in a 3-2 victory against the New Jersey Devils, Luongo became the second goaltender in NHL history, along with Patrick Roy, to register 200 wins with two different franchises (Vancouver: 252, 2006-14). Luongo is five games away from becoming only the third goaltender in NHL history to play 1,000 games. He became fourth all-time in wins with his 455th career victory on Nov. 10, 2017 in Buffalo (4-1 W), surpassing Curtis Joseph and tied Tony Esposito and Ed Belfour for ninth all-time in shutouts with the 76th of his career on March 19, 2018 in his hometown of Montreal (2-0 W).
Luongo is the Florida franchise leader in wins (209), shutouts (37) and games played by a goaltender (523).
The Masterton Trophy is awarded each season under the trusteeship of the PHWA to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr was the recipient of the 2016 Masterton Trophy.
The Masterton Trophy winner is selected from a poll of the 30 chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season.
A $2,500 grant from the PHWA is awarded annually to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund, based in Bloomington, Minn., in the name of the winner.
The PHWA first presented the Masterton Trophy in 1968 to commemorate the late Bill Masterton, a player with the Minnesota North Stars, who exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Masterton died January 15, 1968 following an injury suffered in a game.
