SUNRISE, Fla. -- Paul Maurice never ceases to be amazed by Matthew Tkachuk.
"This guy's a rock star," the Florida Panthers head coach said.
Helping the Panthers secure a pair of important points before hitting the road, Tkachuk scored a hat trick during an exhilarating 5-3 win over the Arizona Coyotes at FLA Live Arena on Tuesday.
"Guys were able to find me a lot tonight," said Tkachuk, who leads the Panthers in goals (20), assists (27) and points (47) this season. "I'm shooting the puck more, which is a big thing for myself. Being around the net, obviously that's something that I pride myself on. I have a whole lot more to give and another level to get to. Hopefully I can pick it up here in the second half."

Opening the scoring just 1:09 after the puck had dropped in the first period, Tkachuk collected a perfect pass from Aleksander Barkov and beat Karel Vejmelka with a wrist shot from just below the right circle to give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.
Finding the back of the net for the second straight game, Eric Staal extended the lead to 2-0 when he beat Vejmelka from the right side of the net with a sharp-angle shot at 11:21. Steadily chipping in from the bottom six, Staal has posted six goals and six assists in his last 16 games.
With 2.1 seconds left in the first period, the Coyotes got on the board when Jakob Chychrun sent a slot pass from Clayton Keller past Spencer Knight from on the doorstep to cut Florida's lead down to 2-1.
Tying things up in the second period, Keller carried the puck across the slot before sending a backhand shot through traffic and past Knight to make it 2-2 at 5:17. Putting the Panthers back on top later in the period, Tkachuk roofed a shot right over Vejmelka to make it 3-2 at 10:37.
Getting the game back to a deadlock, Nick Bjugstad, who suited up for the Panthers for parts of seven seasons from 2013-2019, tipped in a point shot from J.J. Moser to make it 3-3 at 13:59.
Finishing off a nifty tic-tac-toe passing sequence, Staal took a pass from Ryan Lomberg and beat Vejmelka with a quick wrist shot from the slot to put the Panthers back on top 4-3 at 16:01. Fourth among active NHL players in goals, the goal was the 447th of his long and storied career.
"He took a year off," Panthers defenseman Marc Staal said of his brother. "For him to be doing what he's doing right now is pretty impressive. He's always had a knack for the net. He had some chances earlier that weren't going for him, and now he's finding a way to bury it."
Earning the third regular-season hat trick of his career, Tkachuk dashed straight toward the net in transition on the power play, took a tape-to-tape pass from Sam Reinhart and powered the puck past Vejmelka to increase Florida's advantage to 5-3 at 19:29.

With the secondary assist on the goal, Knight recorded the first NHL point of his career.
"I think coach came out with a message to just work as hard as we can right from the puck drop and go for three periods," said Knight, who stopped 33 of 36 shots against Arizona. "If there's a lot of adversity in the game, you just keep working hard. I think that's what we did. The guys played really well in front of me, and we came up big in the right moments. It was a good game."
Shutting the door, Knight stopped all 14 shots he faced in the third period.
"We need these two points every game," Tkachuk said. "We're not in the world's greatest position. I thought our team, to be honest, probably didn't have our best stuff. There were some good things. I thought the way we were able to answer their goals was a good thing, but we can still obviously clean so many things up."

CATS QUOTES

"He's got a knack for the net. He's done it his whole career. He's a big offensive guy. He does a lot of great things for us. He's on the PK and he takes a lot of important draws. He was one of my favorite players to watch when I was younger, so getting a chance to play with him is awesome."- Matthew Tkachuk on Eric Staal
"He makes a ton of great little plays all game long. A big night for us when we needed it. It kind of looked like a whole home game for him out there. He had three goals, and it was big for us." - Marc Staal on Matthew Tkachuk
