Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel has been the most productive goal scorer in the NHL since the calendar flipped to 2019. He was rewarded for his scoring spree by earning NHL Third Star of the Week honors this afternoon for the week ending January 13.

Guentzel tied Tampa Bay's Brayden Point and Carolina's Sebastian Aho for the NHL lead with five goals last week, helping the Penguins win two of their three games. Among his five goals, two came at even strength, two were on the power play and one came shorthanded. Guentzel leads the NHL with seven goals in 2019.
Last Friday night in Anaheim, Guentzel's career night was the catalyst behind Pittsburgh's 7-4 win, which featured the Penguins coming back from an early 3-0 hole. Guentzel's first two goals tied the game at 3-3 in the second period. He then punctuated the victory by polishing off his second hat trick of the season by scoring into an empty net on his career-high seventh shot of the evening.
One night later, Guentzel scored both goals in Pittsburgh's 5-2 loss in Los Angeles. His first tally was the first regular-season shorthanded goal of his career. When Guentzel tallied again in the third period, he established a new personal high with his 23rd goal, surpassing his total of 22 set last year.
Last month, the Penguins rewarded Guentzel with a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2023-24 campaign. Not long after the ink dried on that deal, Guentzel began rattling off his active six-game point streak (7G-3A-10PTS), which equals the longest run of his career.
Heading into Tuesday night's 10:00 PM ET visit to San Jose, Guentzel has produced 23 goals and 21 assists for 44 points in 45 games this year. He leads the Penguins in goals.
