Biega, 31, was acquired by Detroit in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 6 in exchange for left wing David Pope. Biega has appeared in 48 games with the Red Wings this season, notching three points (0-3-3), 24 penalty minutes and 53 shots on goal in 16:20 average time on ice, while ranking third on the team with 111 hits and sixth with 45 blocked shots. Over the last month, Biega has logged an average of 19:38 time on ice, ranking third among the team's defensemen since Feb. 6. The 5-foot-10, 199-pound blueliner has totaled 227 NHL games with Vancouver and Detroit since 2014-15, registering 39 points (4-35-39) and 188 penalty minutes.
Originally drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the fifth round (147th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Biega has also appeared in 351 American Hockey League Games since 2010-11 with the Portland Pirates, Rochester Americans and Utica Comets, logging 115 points (20-95-115), a plus-16 rating and 245 penalty minutes. The Montreal, Quebec, native also spent four seasons at Harvard University, where he served as captain as a senior in 2009-10. In 131 collegiate games with the Crimson, Biega totaled 70 points (15-55-70) and 144 penalty minutes. He was twice named to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference's Third All-Star Team and was an ECAC All-Rookie Team member as a freshman in 2006-07.
