By the Numbers will highlight the on-ice accomplishments in the 2019-20 season for the Detroit Red Wings' prospects. Twice a week during the offseason, By the Numbers will profile a different player in the system, focusing on his statistical highs. This week we focus on forward Robert Mastrosimone.

After the Red Wings drafted forward Robert Mastrosimone in the second round, 54th overall, in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft last June, he attended development camp at Little Caesars Arena the following week.

It was a good week for Mastrosimone, who was coming off two successful seasons with the USHL's Chicago Steel.

Then on the final day of camp, during the Red and White Game, Mastrosimone suffered a broken right ankle blocking a shot.

Missing 4-6 weeks of offseason training did not prevent Mastrosimone from being ready for the start of his freshman season at Boston University.

The gritty young forward played every game for the Terriers.

At 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Mastrosimone still has to gain some weight and strength, which he will have time to do in college.

34 - Mastrosimone played 34 games for the Boston University Terriers in his first year, tied with six others for the team lead.

1 - Mastrosimone did not wait long to get his first collegiate points, recording a goal and an assist on Oct. 5 in a 7-3 victory at Union College.

7- The freshman forward scored seven goals. Patrick Curry led with 19, David Farrance and Patrick Harper were second with 14 apiece and fellow freshman Trevor Zegras was third with 11.

10 - With 10 assists, Mastrosimone was tied for sixth with Case McCarthy. Farrance led with 29, Zegras was second with 25, Harper was third with 23, Curry and Domenick Fensore were fourth with 13 each and Jake wise was fifth with 11. Mastrosimone also had only 10 penalty minutes, well behind Zegras' team-leading 43.

17 - Mastrosimone's 17 points ranked fifth on the Terriers, behind Farrance's 43, Harper's 37, Zegras' 36 and Curry's 32.

21 - With 21 blocks, Mastrosimone was second in blocked shots among Terriers forwards behind Matthew Quercia's 34. Defenseman Kasper Kotkansalo, a fellow Wings prospect, led the team with 50 blocked shots.

3 - Mastrosimone was one of three Red Wings prospects to play for Boston University, along with fellow freshman forward Ethan Phillips (fourth round, 97th overall, 2019) and junior defenseman Kotkansalo (third round, 71st, 2017).

4 - From Dec. 3-Jan. 11, Mastrosimone had a four-game point streak. He had goals in back-to-back games on Dec. 3 in a 5-2 win over Harvard and on Dec. 7 in a 6-3 win over Northeastern. Then Mastrosimone had assists in back-to-back games on Jan. 8 in a 3-2 victory over Brown and on Jan. 11 in a 5-4 loss at Dartmouth.

Quotable: "I think he had a good year. One thing with Robert, we drafted him, he's another one that was really light. He's 5-10 but I think right around 165 pounds, 170 pounds. He's another one, college is not an easy step for anyone but especially smaller true freshmen. But to his credit, he went in and had 17 points in 34 games. The nice thing for him was they had a lot of injuries there this year so he got to play bigger roles, bigger minutes than he probably normally would as a freshman and I think he did well. Robert knows that this summer is going to be a big summer for him in terms of training, getting physically ready for next year but he's got great grit, I like his hockey sense. He's got some good offensive ability. He seems to be a guy that can obviously play both sides of the puck and bring good energy to a team as well. There's lots of upside to him. Great attitude in this kid and he's only going to get better." - Shawn Horcoff, director of player development and assistant director of player personnel
