Red Wings acquire defenseman Kyle Wood from Carolina

DETROIT -The Detroit Red Wings today acquired defenseman Kyle Wood from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Oliwer Kaski.
Wood, 23, is in his fourth professional season with the Charlotte Checkers and has tallied five points (3-2-5) in 14 games. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound blueliner has totaled 201 games in the American Hockey League since 2015-16, registering 102 points (26-76-102) and 105 penalty minutes with the Springfield Falcons, Tucson Roadrunners, San Jose Barracuda and Checkers. Wood was a 2017 AHL All-Star and earned a spot on the AHL All-Rookie Team in 2016-17 after he debuted with 43 points (14-29-43) and 16 penalty minutes in 68 games with Tucson, which ranked third on his team and 11th among all AHL defensemen. The Waterloo, Ontario, native matched his career high in assists (29) with San Jose in 2018-19, while serving as one of the team's alternate captains.

Originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the third round (84th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Wood played parts of four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2012-16 before his professional career. In 165 career OHL games with the Brampton Battalion and North Bay Battalion, he totaled 93 points (27-66-93), a plus-34 rating and 65 penalty minutes, while adding 34 points (5-29-34), a plus-eight rating and 12 penalty minutes in 53 career postseason games.
